Slept badly woke early spooked with the “only 6” headline. I don’t meditate but like to start each day in my garden with a cuppa & birdwatching. Mum loved birdwatching too & we shared little anecdotes & updates. Little reminders like this, that your loved one is gone…
is sad but still comforting. My youngest is whipping up cookies for my brothers birthday lunch tomorrow I’m browsing mums recipes for inspiration I’m the cook. Another sad/happy as mums birthday is a couple of days later & we usually got together for a posh meal out.
Not sure why I’m posting this really, just reflecting on grief and how as a nation we seem to have become numb to the daily figures, cruel & thoughtless for those who covid DOES pose a life/death threat. Just reaching out to anyone mourning, or whose life is forever changed

Dear Medical brothers and sisters, we can’t know everything about Medicine but should acknowledge this, have professional curiosity, seek answers and listen to our patients. Please don’t gaslight. Thank you for your work @resiapretorius et al…
As a patient my peer told me my l LC severe fatigue, dyspnoea, brain fog, leg weakness, coordination problems, paraesthesia + HR of 110-170 were due to overworking/in my head +’to volunteer to work with older people and go for a walk/see a psychologist.
Imagine how you’d feel to know you’re unwell as a doctor averaging 300-2000 steps on a ‘good ill day’ then too unwell to function/make food/remember to drink fluids/wash/concentrate on tv? and be told this! ≠Stress! ≠psychologise this!

1/🧵A patient told me he lost hope. A spouse got mad at me for being too direct. I needed #compassion & truth to restructure #hope toward what was possible. These tools can be taught, learned & modeled.

A story for you, placing compassion & hope side-by-side… Image
2/ Compassion and Hope must be modeled for students to learn…and must be part of every interaction with patients.
In my end-of-life conversations, while always remaining kind, I avoid providing false hope. Image
3/ I was once explaining to a daughter that her mother was dying on the ventilator, a conclusion I had come to over five days as, despite everything we had done, no reprieve was in sight. The once-placid daughter slammed her fist on the table, then raised it at me as I recoiled.

1/🧵 #Wisdom in 2 little words: Over & Next
@rachelnpr on @NPR asked Norman Lear at 99 y/o (“All in the Family” game) how he’s persevered?
Lear’s answer is both simple and mystic! Read on…💥
2/ “Two little words we don’t pay enough attention to: Over & Next. When something is over, it is over. And we are on to next. I like to think about the hammock in the middle of those two words.”
I’m going to rest in the hammock today…what do this mean for me?
3/ “That’s living in the moment. That’s the moment I believe I’m living as I complete this sentence. And it couldn’t be more important to me.” #NormanLear

1. Starting COP26 on Halloween, a festival for the dead, doesn't give much hope.

2. Traditions can alienate you if you don't feel part of it. So in my efforts to blend in with the Canadians, I searched the internet to explain #Halloween and found that we have to go back into history as I so often do in The Planet newsletter.

3. There was not much of #Halloween celebration in colonial New England, where rigid Protestant beliefs prevented frivolously celebrating, especially of traditions with some doubtful pre-Christian fingerprints all over it.

Not ruling in Maharashtra by @BJP4India currently
is one of the main reason.
So to make all possible disturbances at any cost & playing dirty manipulated games in Maharashtra by them @AmitShah @narendramodi
What's the major thing in Maharashtra that brings (1/12)

Answer is the our own Bollywood.
While doing this, whoever from inside B-town shows her/his support to this bjp party by doing whatever they want you to do (by being used) or by asking how to eat 🥭 or by bootlicking or by any means (2/12)

1) #SundayThoughts Beauchamp has been proven correct, pharma model wrong. Just like epigenetics is now the working paradigm for all MD, Wellness coaches keeping up with science, last two years have cemented #TerrainAsPrimary. CDC now says 95% deaths 4 co-morbidities on avg.
2) The CDCs own data is EXACTLY what one would predict from Beauchamp’s thoughts. Indeed, aware modern science now calls Beauchamp’s insights #immunometabolism Abudanant studies showing that with co-morbidities worse pathogen outcomes+more transmission…
3) Note in my Tweet Beauchamp is #hope #livingNOTfear #wayforward Getting vit D levels to 50 almost no risk from SARS2. Getting better BG control can happen in days. TODAY. If someone went to LCHF real food today, most would see a huge change. And it’s the biggest risk factor.

This is hard to write but it is true for many. What I’m about to say is a harsh reality of what people go through.

What I am about to say is also the reason why a lot of people don’t ask for help.

People do not ask for help because of the fears and stigmas that exist.

Here Is Something to think about,

What if you were a #singleparent with a #child

You work full time for $15.00/hr

You take home roughly $960.00 per paycheck (bi-weekly after taxes)

#singleparent #parenting #Blessed #grateful #calgary #calgarylife #alberta #yyc

Your bills per month:

$1,000 or more for rent
$150 or more for cable/internet
$250 or more for utilities
$150 per month for car insurance

So let’s do the math

You bring home about
$1,920.00 a month

Your bills average about $1,500(give or take)

Twenty years ago, the world changed forever. The company I worked for lost more than 300 employees as a plane hit the floor we occupied in the World Trade Center.
For months, as employees, we volunteered helping family members locate loved ones, feeding the Red Cross workers, arranging funerals, and tripling up in cubicles so everyone had space to work. For some of us, it feels like yesterday.
For others, a faint memory. Let’s never forget those who lost loved ones, those who’ve fought for freedom, and the indelible compassion that emerged in humanity. This last 18 months has required more of the same, and the season ahead will no doubt still need it.

🚨😔😔😞What a day😞😔😔🚨

Is it ever going to get better?

How can there be so many people in need? So many people that are falling through the cracks?

It is so hard to keep going knowing we can only do so much…but when does one draw the line?

Who helps the helpers?
Today was a high stress and difficult to process day filled with so many people who are hurting and lost that it is heartbreaking💔.

We might have to make the difficult decision to close our doors. Too many people in need.

Who helps the helpers?
We normally take a few days on the weekend for self care.

We woke up to 171 phone calls, 83 text messages and 47 emails from people asking for help. Asking for direction.

People in Alberta are😟worried. Scared. Frustratingly frustrated with what has been happening in Alberta.

A #HCWforVaccines thread about the power of #gratitude & action. So, 2 days ago, my #HCWvsHunger co-captain & muse tweeted this out of the blue, tagging me. 👇 1/X
And I immediately texted her that she needed to give me a heads up because:

1) I can’t say no to this
2) I can’t say no to @acweyand
3) Last time we did this (#HCWvsHunger, Team #FeedalizumabGiveocin), I didn’t shower or even sleep almost at all for 4d.

1/🧵🎥 Hard-Won #Wisdom from the wife of a #LongCovid patient >140 days into hospitalization.

You need to hear her 2 messages:
1. “What I can tell you is I’ve never given up #hope. To make it to tomorrow, we have to make it through today first.”

2/ When things are acute, like in this video of her husband when he was 1st in the ICU, we tend to think our task list is all technological. I’m guilty of this. And I’ve caused ⬆️ suffering because of my tunnel vision.

3/🎥 Point #2 from my pts wife:
“He’s not gonna get better next week or next month. #COVID takes a LONG time. Our lives are forever changed. Expect setbacks & be your loved one’s advocate!”

NOW she & he are convinced of the importance of #Vaccination & masking. Learn from them!

Difference between #success & #failure lies in #hope. But here we need to understand hope is not day dreaming, by no means it is to be reason to stop short of excellence but it is how you design a world around you. A person with hope will differentiate him from others by
1. is happy and grateful for the life they have, however, they are by no means content and therefore are always looking to make improvements.
2. Is a big dreamer who consistently imagines a better world than the one they currently live in. However, they are never really satisfied
with just dreaming. They instead turn their dreams into concrete goals built upon their personal values.
3. Has an intense desire for change. In other words, they don’t accept things as they are. They instead want to always make things better by positive attitude.

Earlier today we were in downtown #yyc handing out water & gatorade and fruit, when we decided to stop & have a break by the Cat Cafe...when we came upon a senior lady rummaging through the city's garbage bins.

#Yyccc #Calgary #Alberta #Canada #SeniorLiving #seniorcare #Seniors
We thought she was looking for bottles to turn in for money but we were wrong. She was looking for both bottles & she was also taking food out of the bins & putting it in her cart.

As soon as we saw that we went over to offer her our help.

#Help #Community #Compassion #BeKind
We went over, asked if we could get her a cold drink & a snack & asked her if she'd like to join us on our break.

She accepted. We went into the coffee shop across from the Cat Cafe (Forgot Name), grabbed some drinks & snacks and sat down in the shade across the street. #Hope

1/🧵🎥 This story has a GOOD ENDING!

Look how my patient’s right leg flails around. This is INVOLUNTARY. He’s trying to stop but his brain is doing this against his will. It is “hemiballismus” & was caused by a fungus deep inside his brain. Read🧵
2/ He was having these movements day & night. Unable to sleep. We admitted him to our ICU and realized the fungus Cryptococcus was causing a brain infection called meningitis. He had  no underlying immune diseases or other health problems.

Another 🎥, all shown w his permission
3/ His MRI showed 2 pockets of infection on both sides of his brain in a place called the basal ganglia, which controls movement. This area had to heal for him to rest and be at peace again.

This morning we saw something we will NEVER forget.

We were at the #Walmart in Southeast #Calgary. We were shopping for some groceries when my stepson saw someone take a package of meat and put it under their shirt and then slowly walk over to their cart. #Food #Hungry #Alberta
This person had very few things in their cart. My stepson knows what I do here at @HarvestHillsYYC & he asked if we could help them.

I said yes we could but that this person would feel ganged up on if we all walked over to them, so I told him to stay here and that I’d walk over.
I walked over to where they had their cart and said “I know what it is like to struggle. I would love it if you’d let me help you and I’d like to pay for your groceries.”

This person looked up at me and said “did you see me take the meat?” I said “yes I did. I’d like to help”.

We have a serious emergency.

Late this afternoon we were contacted by a senior named “Helen”. She only had one meal left in her kitchen.

She called us for help and we are helping.

We will be using the last of our available funds to get her some much needed groceries. #YYC #YEG
We will hopefully be giving her enough groceries for an entire month so she doesn’t have to worry about having to choose between medications/food, food/electricity, food/rent.

Too many #Calgarians are being ignored and forgotten. Too many #Calgarians are afraid to ask for #help.
We need help. If anyone can help with a donation towards her food hamper, we will be here for about 2 more hours because we are shopping for four seniors tonight.

You can help by donating by any of the options ⬇️ #Donate #community #donations #DisabilityTwitter #BeKind #Alberta

Unpopular opinion incoming, but I think it gets to the heart of what’s happening here. I was always fascinated by the culture of self-deprecation that seems to be commonplace in the US. I was taught growing up to speak WORDS OF LIFE over myself, NOT words of hurt. 1/7
In the US, I’ve found that SOME people refer to themselves in the MOST demeaning ways. &Trust me,I get it, but only to a certain extent. You are “taking back your power, controlling the narrative, & all these things.” But it still somehow never quite sat right with my spirit. 2/7
I’d literally CRINGE when my friends in college would call themselves “fat,ugly,lazy..” ALL the things. Even if they’d pass it off in a joking way. It would STILL make me cringe. The point here is, the WORDS that we SPEAK over OURSELVES matter. It might not SEEM that way.. 3/7

जब तक सांस तब तक आस, they say in Hindi.

Roughly translating to "till there's life, there's hope". In my life, I've thought of it more like, "till there's work, there's hope." (1/6)
Because in our paths, disappointments will be plenty - Investors who don't understand the vision, employees who don't share your drive, friends who think you've very high expectations, customers who aren't ready yet - none of this your fault, but all of it inevitable. (2/6)
To be a successful entrepreneur, to build something that doesn't exist yet, you need to accept (even expect) finite disappointment without ever losing infinite hope.

Here are some ways to do it. (3/6)

1/🧵An Epiphany: #delirium treated w touch & eye contact, day by day...his mom cried, “He won’t let us help him shake this damned disease.” Finally his mind cleared. “What matters to you? How can I help?” Slowly, surely, he asked, “Doc, can you help me stop drinking?”💔
2/ #GroundZero. What a privilege it is to witness someone enter a long-awaited epiphany that opens the door to so much recovery. Unfortunately, in my early years as a doc, I thought, “Well, this isn’t critical care, so I’ll move on & let someone else take over.”

#shame on me
3/ But what is a doctor for?

1. To reduce human suffering & heal people where they are.
2. Plus the Latin root is “docere,” teacher.

It’s a dual vocation: healer + teacher. Because of the “Law of the Gift,” I know that the more I give, the more I receive, so…
