On a serious note regarding #TheLastOfUs . I’m not sure even the creators understand the significance of Joel’s choice. By refusing to sacrifice Ellie for humanity/vaccine, he didn’t compromise his humanity — he solidified it. He proved that humanity wasn’t gone.
If we get to the point where we are willing to kill children for the hope of a better world, then we have lost our humanity, and there is no point in developing a vaccine because the essential thing that makes us human is gone.
And if we are willing to kill our OWN children for that world??? We are truly depraved and beyond hope. Humanity is about balancing the needs of the collective with the individual. When the collective demands innocent blood, we cease to have humanity.
There is no difference between David and the cannibals and Marlene. Both think that the flesh of children is an acceptable price to pay for survival. Both choose to ignore Ellie’s humanity and use her for their own purposes. Both see themselves as righteous leaders
That’s why it’s very significant that after David, Ellie goes to Marlene. It is one assault after another. One to feed a man’s desires and (literally) his starving people and the other to restore a pre-pandemic world.
And in many ways, this is reminiscent of how Sarah died, yes? Shot by a soldier who assumed she was infected and decided that the good of humanity was more important than her life.
Tbh this is where I actually see the Zionist thought behind all this. The fact that Joel saving Ellie is seen as “complicated” rather than a triumph shines through in the comments the creators wrote TBH. And what is notorious for thinking sacrificing children is “complicated”
The fact that the show assumes this is a moral exercise that we will debate says a lot about the underlying politics of the show itself. The fact that Joel’s choice is supposed to be conflicting, that we’re supposed to sympathize with Marlene… yes I am seeing the Zionism tbh

This was actually scary to read. That JK Rowling truly believes that trans people are powerful and insidious and influential shows the depths of her hatred. Because it’s demonstrably untrue. Image
Even as a Black cis woman, in a great many situations I still have power over white trans women. Almost every cis woman I know could wake up and decide to be publicly transphobic and lose next to nothing materially or professionally, and in fact there’s a clear path to gain.
So because this statement is demonstrably untrue and JKR is not stupid or really a conspiracy theorist, what JK Rowling is really saying here — make no mistake about it — is that she sees the very existence of trans people as the threat. Their existence is the danger.

It’s funny that men don’t want to sleep with virgins and have the “responsibility of being someone’s first” and yet a lot of these same men have no problem being someone’s “first” when they’re vulnerable from a traumatic event or breakup LMFAO
It’s just all this discourse about how your dick is so good and wonderful that a virgin will just become mystically attached to it and no discourse whatsoever on the men who see women going through it and don’t think “hmm maybe not the best time to bang”
Bc I’ve personally seen men waiting in the wings for someone to break up or even divorce! Or men not having any self awareness of like why sleeping with someone who’s just lost a loved one or gone through a trauma is a questionable thing. But y’all don’t care about that

I switched from political/social justice/health writing to mainly travel/lifestyle/entertainment writing in 2021 bc I was burnt out. But it still makes me laugh when people try to use me being a travel writer to make a gotcha about me being too dumb to understand social issues.
For one thing, travel writers aren’t dumb. Most of the good ones actually tackle social issues in complex ways that would be hard for even some of the best political writers I know bc the threads are harder to find
For the other thing, I actually made a name for myself by talking about mental health in a deep way and doing political/social justice writing. There was a time that was ALL I did and my career was absolutely incredibly advanced for my age especially

Every 7 years Americans remember that Indian cinema is actually really fucking fun and it’s both wholesome and annoying
So many people in the world watch Indian cinema! White North Americans are like the only ones not locked in!
I can’t tell you how annoying it is when I’m telling a white person about an Indian film I like and they’re like wow your interests are so niche, please a Karan johar film is not niche I am basic like half the world

And honestly being so cavalier about how people don’t want to treat elderly people or specialize in it is very fucking gross considering they have a high rate of mental illness, lower access to health insurance or resources to pay for therapy out of pocket.
Like there are ALREADY massive barriers to elderly people seeking mental health care and on top of that they have to worry about a bunch of therapist choosing not to do it bc they simply don’t like the work or elderly people
I worked at a hospital once and an elderly man came dead bc he had shot himself in the head and tbh I think of that right now listening to these bobble head therapists joke about not liking to treat “the elderly”

I’m actually glad a bunch of therapists are exposing themselves as mean people motivated by bias who don’t necessarily see themselves as clinicians bc I’ve long said we need to stop assuming going to therapy is proof of morality or goodness. Assholes being treated by assholes
ain’t no way y’all are improving as humans if you’re being treated by people who won’t treat “the elderly” or who think dealing with complex trauma is too much. How will that person advise you to deal with the elderly people in your life? The traumatized?
And you want to say it’s merely a decision of what you’re trained in after the fact but y’all don’t say “I’m not trained in couples/elderly/complex trauma survivors” y’all laugh and cackle and show your teef about it first and THEN want to talk about some training
