It's impossible to drive in Denver without seeing cars with expired plates
The city's given 16,000 tickets in 2.5 months for expired tags
Now penalties are increasing around the state for expired tags and people with out-of-state plates who've lived in Colorado for a while
🧵
The state DMV estimates 92,000 people a year move to CO but don't register their car here
Now that'll cost you $$$. The new rules:
-Must register car within 90 days of moving to CO and show proof
-Will be responsible for back taxes for late registration
-$25 a month late fine
Penalties will also increase for expired temporary tags
New rules:
-Must register car within 60 days of purchase
-$25 a month late penalty, up to $100
-Drivers will be responsible for back taxes and fees from the date the temporary tags expired
We've heard people say they've had trouble getting plates from their county
I reached out to county clerks across the metro. Only DMV that has any delay right now is Denver due to staffing issues
Could take 4-6 weeks to get a plate from them. Denver says usual is 4 weeks
"It’s a matter of making sure that people aren’t freeloading," one lawmaker told me
"Everyone needs to pay their fair share," another clerk said
There’s a single intersection in Northern Colorado where you can get gas for under $3.40 a gallon
That’s way less than the state average of $4.78 per gallon
Turns out it has nothing really to do with oil prices
There’s a major price war brewing off exit 240 in Firestone
There are four stations at this intersection. Each is going lower than the other
Phillips66: $3.35
QuickTrip/Circle K: $3.53
7/11: $3.87
State avg: $4.78
QuickTrip just moved in last month which intensified competition
People are waiting +30mins to fill up at the cheapest one
The owner of the Phillips66 came up to me outside and asked if we wanted to watch him lower his gas prices 4 cents while he changed the board outside his station
“It’s a price war” he told me
He says he’s losing money at this point on gas, but he wants the customers lining up

A passenger on United 328 took this video of flames shooting out from the engine. Some people told me they said prayers and held their loved ones' hands as they looked out the window. Flight was on its way to Hawaii from Denver. Glad everyone onboard is safe #9News
Every passenger I've talked to on United 328 wanted to thank the pilots and crew who safely landed the plane. Without them today could've looked a lot different.
Listen to the pilot make the mayday call: "Just experienced an engine failure. Need to return immediately" #9News
Passengers on United 328 describe a harrowing experience as they looked out windows and saw an engine on fire.
"My daughter was sitting on the window. I was like, don’t look. Let’s close it up. Let’s just pray. So that’s what we did. We held hands and said some prayers" #9News
Hello from downtown Denver where far-right militia groups are holding a rally. Far-left Black Lives Matter Antifa groups are holding a counter protest nearby. Lots of police and militia groups out already. Fences seem to be in place to try and separate the groups. #9News
The far-right militia groups and far-left BLM/Antifa groups have been active on social media recently telling people to show up to the dueling events. I’ll thread what I see throughout the day here. Follow along #9News
Dozens of militia group members arrive for the “patriot muster” in Denver. Many are carrying shields and wearing helmets #9News
A protest in front of Denver Police headquarters is small but has escalated quickly. About 50 protesters are here right now, many with shields and helmets. A van pulled up and passed out shields to protesters. Protesters are at a standoff with a SWAT team now #9News
Someone with a hand axe broke a window at a building across from DPD headquarters. A resident who says she lives in the building came down and yelled at them to stop. “This is not productive” #9News
Protesters are firing fireworks at police officers. The fireworks are exploding behind the police barrier and around the officers dressed in riot gear. Officers have fired what I believe is some sort of non-lethal weapon with an irritant #9News
Aurora Police came on the loudspeaker multiple times to tell people the protest was declared an “unlawful assembly.” I have not heard any correction #9News
There’s a man playing the violin just feet away from the line of riot police. He’s been playing the entire time. #ElijahMcClain loved the violin #9News
Several hundred people are here now at a standoff with police in riot gear. The crowd is growing significantly. Police still holding their line in front of Aurora PD headquarters #9News
