1 year of pediatrics residency. My experience and Simple PTR for those interested in taking Pediatrics.

1. Be ready to lose a lot of pens and staplers. Never forget to carry spares. Also peds is incomplete without a simple measuring tape.

2. Be ready to be a part of /n
One of the most overworked departments if you choose a tertiary care hospital.

2. Learn to look. You'llget to see the most classical and the most obscure findings if you're observant enough.

3. A crying baby should never be ignored. Never move on if you dont find a reason /n
4. Never ignore a mother's complaint. For you its a patient, for her its her world.

5. Never take a symptomatic history. Never try to find a history based on the signs and symptoms you see. The parents out of frustration and agitation may say yes to everything you ask.
/n
Instead let them describe in detail the sequence and progression - then make a provisional diagnosis.

6. Minimise the pricks. Phlebotomy - is essential however, try to bundle your approach.

7. Ask your seniors. It takes years to identify a sick child. Only the most keen eyes/n
Can spot a sick child. Ask your seniors and learn to spot these signs - like letharginess, retractions, silent chest, head bob, tremors, subtle seizures etc.

8. Read updates - pediatrics is fairly a new branch. A lot of our knowledge comes from adults, but new studies /n
Will always change the outlook and algorithm towards a particular disease. Learn to update yourself.

9. Call for help. You are not a superhero. You are a human. Always Call for help.

/n
10. A dying child will take a toll on you. Their suffering and end might make you depressed. It might make you throw up. The experience will kick you in the guts.
You have to deal with it- but don't forget to ask for help if you feel burnt out or overwhelmed.
/n
But i end this thread with something i read -

'In Pediatrics, you don't just save a life you save a lifetime.'
If you love pediatrics, you will love every day even if its the hardest one.
