My paternal grandmother had eight children. My maternal grandmother had 11 children (she was pregnant 14 times).
My mother is the eldest of those children and she has three children of her own.
I am the eldest of those children and I am glad to have none of my own.
I am happy with the life I have created. I have never wondered what it would have been like to have children. I say that because we often hear “you’ll regret it when it’s too late.” Well, here I am on the other side -- it is “too late” -- and I am here to say: I do not regret it.
What would the freedom to choose, for all, look like?
When I started saying in public lectures about 15-20 yrs ago that I was childfree by choice, women would track me down in a corridor, backstage, or in the bathroom to whisper “Thank you. I have never heard another woman say that out loud before.”
I hope we hear it more now and from more people.
Most books/essays I've seen about being childfree by choice are written by white cis women. We need to hear from more women of colour and of different cultural & faith backgrounds as well as trans men and non-binary people.
I'm working on my own book.
Until I write it, read and share my essay Unmothering and others here, all free to read and share.

Labour Party says it will urge UK firms to publish menopause action plan
"Menopausal women could be offered paid time off and working environments with temperature-controlled areas under Labour plans to support the wellbeing of women in the workplace."
About one in 10 women aged 45-55 left their jobs last year due to their symptoms and ultimately the lack of workplace support, according to research supported by the Fawcett Society.
Three years ago, Labour offered women flexible working hours and a requirement for employers to treat the menopause like a long-term fluctuating health condition.

"For most of us, it will happen when we need to be firing on all cylinders at work.
'There’s a real overlap between when menopause tends to happen and the moment when a lot of women are poised for leadership positions that could take their careers to the next level...'
'If they’re also experiencing common menopausal symptoms like depression, fatigue or anxiety, it could prevent them from making it to top-tier positions, even though they were on that trajectory.' thestar.com/life/2023/02/2…
I launched my newsletter FEMINIST GIANT to highlight global feminist resistance to patriarchal fuckery. Such resistance includes the fight vs transphobia, which contributors Inaara Merani and Samiha Hossain highlight in their weekly Global Roundups.
The New York Times and other publications that platform transphobia are not the only media out there.
As Samiha and Inaara's Global Roundups show, there are plenty of media out there that report without hate on issues that affect our trans and gender expansive friends.
