Regions of China that used to grow wheat and regions that many years ago grew rice have, different cultural attributes today because economics shapes culture, this piece arguing that all of east Asia basically has one culture is weird.
And if you had to locate the most successful ethnic group in America, it’s not east asian, it’s Indians which is a very different culture. But Indias study culture isn’t genetics which is what hanania is implying, testing was a big part of colonial rule.
Also Asian American behaviors change over time as they are in the US over successive generations, that implies culture is a big factor ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/P…
Well he says he doesn't buy cultural argument but what he's describing is culture because he's looking for same behaviors, but the outcomes vary. Even in US there's broad variation among Asian subgroups in achievement. Ctrl+F "vietnamese" not found.
I think the whole thing is trolling to try to imply that genetics is responsible for East Asian sameness (although they aren't that much the same, Hanania doesn't grapple with variations in success in US among subgroups for example)
Technically substack is supposed to ban racial superiority arguments so trolling might be the best way for him to promote his race science, who knows
Eh I disagree, if someone is validating the idea that behavior is defined by someone’s “race” it’s racist. They can just come out and say they think thats true if that’s what they believe instead of beating around the bush.

The lobbyist who is sitting behind Chou is the one who congressional aides said compared removing videos about Uyghurs to battling Al Qaeda. If the company is an American company as said over and over, why do they make arguments that come from the Chinese Communist Party?
That's Michael Beckerman on the left. These guys say they are an American company collecting American data on American soil, but they won't say things that would anger their Communist Party owners.
You mean the people who in the summer of 2020 all blasted out statements saying that America is a deeply racist country? Anyway, the point is, if they are deferring to the Chinese government in this way, their argument of independence is invalid.

What really blew my mind was learning that TikTok's algorithms operate completely different in China, they prioritize educational videos and limit screen time. Almost like the people who operate TikTok know that the American content is unhealthy and antisocial.
Yes their version is called Douyin, and this 60 minutes piece shows how it differs
America has had lots of laws in place related to the behavior and welfare of children since basically the founding, it has never really been a ron paul/mises-libertarian country in that respect. Regardless TikTok is primarily a national security issue.

Average number of annual murders from 2000-2019 in Portland: 29
In 2022: 97
Portland police have hundreds of vacancies and the shortage impacts things like 911 response times. I'm not sure it's a budget issue so much as they can't attract people to work there in that climate.
I don't understand why people say things like we have a gun problem but policing isn't needed? How do you get rid of the guns without police arresting people who possess and traffic the guns illegally? We tweet a lot and the guns disappear?

Has anyone in Congress ever broached the issue of India discriminating against Pakistani-Americans and making it near impossible to visit India by throwing up barriers to getting a visa? Even if you're born here and have family in India, it's very difficult to visit India.
From what I understand Pakistan doesn't reciprocate, Indian Americans visit Pakistan without any problem. Yet India is discriminating against U.S. citizens of Pakistan ancestry who don't even have Pakistani passports.
Does this category of Tweeter find like a cancer charity and start screaming at them for not addressing AIDS? I raised a specific issue of a class of Americans being discriminated against by a foreign country and something unrelated pops up..

The National Security Minister of Israel partied with people celebrating the burning to death of a Palestinian baby. His job in the government: rule over the Palestinians (who don’t get a vote in the matter).
If you want to argue Israel is a liberal democracy like America or the UK you have to answer what liberal democracy has government ministers with this worldview.

Why are Dunkin’ Donuts stores and motels disproportionately owned by Indians and Pakistanis? One study found like half of motels in America are owned by someone with the last name Patel. Is there some racist superstructure at work or natural cultural networks at play?
Discrimination can play a role in disparities but it’s also just the case that if you believe in multiculturalism and most people do, different cultures do focus on and excel in different areas. Not a matter of inferior or superior.
Well every cultural grouping has things like this, a follower of mine from California mentioned Cambodians and donut shops. It's not particularly the result of any kind of discrimination nor barrier, it's just a cultural preference and network
