I was confused ever since Oda gave Kid the Road Poneglyph rubbings from Big Mom and Kaido. I thought "what's the point? He doesn't have the Zou Poneglyph unlike Luffy and Law and you NEED all 4 otherwise the rubbings are useless. He will never reach Laughtale with them".

THIS IS WHERE THE BURN MARKS MAN COMES IN (let's call him Saul). Oda introduced an ALTERNATIVE way to get to Laughtale through Saul. I say alternative because YOU DON'T NEED THE PONEGLYPHS FOR SAUL'S METHOD!

If Saul was JUST a glyph reader, Kid wouldn't say he's ahead of Luffy since he has Robin + 3 rubbings. This means Saul is a more direct way to Laugh Tale despite your rubbings count. Which begged the question of why would Oda give Kid rubbings if he's gonna use Saul instead?

This chapter gives us the answer! The rubbings of Kid (& potentially Law) were meant to be given to shanks & Blackbeard to accelerate them in the race. THIS is the reason for giving Kid multiple rubbings without having the Zou one and no way to read them.

These events now put Shanks & BB in the same position as Luffy, while STILL offering Kid the alternative route to Laugh Tale via Saul. While it's a shame he got crushed here, It's stupid to think this is the end of Kid's path to Laugh Tale. He might be late, but he's not out yet!
