Today - on a day when we arguably couldn't be any more in need of a different vision for how UK politics could be - THIS is launching

It matters for UK nature, but it might be even more significant for UK politics

Here's a bit of the back story 🧵

peoplesplanfornature.org
Around the time I finished writing the first edition of CITIZENS, @reenwilson and I were presented with an opportunity by @HelenMeech, a friend and former @NewCitProj colleague now working for @Natures_Voice...
Sir David Attenborough was in the process of filming what might well be his final ever documentary series, Wild Isles...

Even in the hectic media landscape of today, an Attenborough series always creates a cultural moment.
Public attention becomes focused, and as a result, change becomes possible. Think of Blue Planet, which created this kind of moment on a global scale, as millions came to terms with the reality of the damage sustained by ocean life.
At that point, though, the Consumer Story was still strong: as a result, all that attention and passion was channelled into individual behaviour change. Such enormous energy, conducted into little more than plastic straws.
But perhaps Wild Isles could be different.

Perhaps we could harness this energy to create a moment when the story might shift...
In 2022, the first phase of the process began, opening a call for stories and ideas, inviting citizens all over the country to share what nature means to them, why it matters, and what they were already doing in their communities.
Tens of thousands of submissions flooded in, reflecting the energy and passion in so many neighbourhoods to protect and enhance the natural environment on their doorsteps.

You can see some of them here

This was then brought together with data and evidence from academics and policy experts to form the input for a citizens’ assembly process.

The structure of this phase drew direct inspiration from the Irish Citizens’ Assembly on abortion in 2018...

theguardian.com/commentisfree/…
100 citizens, representative of the UK population met for 4 weekends over 4 months to learn, deliberate, and make recommendations for the protection and restoration of nature.

You can meet some of them here

Their recommendations cover what national governments should do, but also councils, businesses, and community groups.

Together they form the #PeoplesPlanForNature

Now Wild Isles is on air, the hope is that the attention the series draws will conduct electricity into these recommendations, raising their mandate and visibility to another level.

Soon there will be resources, money and more made available to support community-led action, sustaining and extending the moment.

This is the moment we're in now - and you need to watch this space, because it's just getting started...
This matters hugely for UK nature - but it could also be big for our politics

It's a sight of a way things could be: people - all of us - meaningfully and directly involved in shaping the big decisions

Not just picking from a few fixed options every few years
This is how things work on an ongoing basis in Ireland now

There have been Assemblies on everything from gender equality, how to deal with an ageing population, and now drug policy

citizensassembly.ie
There are places where Assembly structures and other means of ongoing participation are even more embedded into how governments operate

This is a lovely piece on Paris, which in effect has a randomly selected Upper House of the city!

ANYWAY...

Huge congratulations to @Natures_Voice @wwf_uk @nationaltrust for their vision and trust in citizens in getting this far

And big 🙌 to all the @NewCitProj team on this - and our delivery partners @involveUK @SortitionNow @89up as well

Now the work REALLY begins!
Finally - if you want to find out more about the thinking behind the project, you might want to check out @NewCitProj @DemocracyNext - and my book CITIZENS 😁

This is the central dynamic of our times, and it must be broken

Here's how it works, and how to break it 🧵 Diagram showing a reinforcing vicious cycle between two thin
We talk a LOT about people not trusting institutions (politics, business, even NGOs/nonprofits)

But we don't talk enough about INSTITUTIONS NOT TRUSTING PEOPLE

And they don't

The implicit assumption is people are selfish and lazy, so institutions need to do stuff FOR us
That *kind of* works when things are going ok for most people

But when they're going badly, what humans need most is AGENCY

We need to be able to shape the context of our own lives

And institutions doing stuff FOR us stops that

They decide FOR us

They withhold power FROM us

What if we Brits responded to our ridiculous government not (just) with anger, but by stepping into a much deeper, richer way of doing democracy?

Oh look… 👀

peoplesplanfornature.org
The big UK nature NGOs are coming together to crowdsource a “People’s Plan For Nature” - starting by gathering stories and ideas from all over the country and then using a randomly selected citizens’ assembly to digest all that, hear from experts, and produce recommendations
These recs will cover not just “asks” of national government, but of councils and business too - and also crucially what community groups can just get on and do

I think @ColombeCS @Venzon_Andrea are going to be high up my “favourite new friends of 2022” list

Here’s their 5 points on how to build a movement from @ForumAthens

And keep a close eye on @atlasparty

✊🔥 Image
1. WITH not FOR 🤝

“You want to build a movement? You do it WITH people. Say it again. WITH. You don’t do it then take it to them. That’s uncomfortable - but essential.”
2. Data matters but is only the beginning 👩‍💻💃

“Gather and understand data - then use it to bring people together - online and especially offline”

A 🧵 for those piling in on me as a result of this reply to @mrjamesob

TLDR: we are a decent people, one awful govt away from power and possibility, but if ALL we do is lament their awfulness, we are on a fast track to fascism
First thing to say is I’m to a large extent a fan.

I believe in accountability.

But I also believe it’s at best not enough.

We need to build the future we want, in spite of this govt - not just watch them destroy us.

No one is coming to save us.
I also believe that at worst, this sole focus on accountability and black humour ends up with us being complicit in our own destruction.

@ETemelkuran is very good on this. Step 6 is “Let Them Laugh At The Horror”.

🚨 NEW with @arianesconrad via @BBC_Future

Too many people - esp our leaders - believe there are only two possible futures: Orwellian authoritarianism or reheated consumerism

But there is a third: the Citizen future

Where everyone has a role to play

bbc.com/future/article…
This is not a moral argument; it’s empirical

Across the world and in every sector we’re seeing that the best strategy for success in this time is to get everyone on the pitch

To tap into the ideas, energy and resources of everyone
Perhaps the best example is Taiwan - a nation now under dire threat

But which got through Covid better than any other nation thanks to its “Fast, Fun, Fair” approach

I interviewed Digital Minister Audrey Tang here if you want more

On Thursday I was at #FutureOfBritain conf hosted by @InstituteGC @BritainProject @mylifemysay

The pitch was ideas for a new politics, and there was some good stuff

But I came away deeply worried, by a SERIOUS lack of respect for our nation’s biggest asset

Its people

🧵
It started well, with a powerful challenge from @cloverhogan

“Voting is too often a choice between a climate denier and a serial procrastinator”

🔥🎯
Next up @monicabeharding with the polling data - and this one stood out

76% of us agree that “our political system is broken and the main parties don’t know how to fix it”
