NOW: #Durham City Council work session is getting underway. Council members Freeman and Caballero are speaking about the recent shooting of three 16-year-olds. @WRAL
Caballero: "It was an extremely tragic day for our City...the victims were all children. And while the suspect was legally an adult, he was also a young person. This violence has rocked our community, and in particular is being felt within the Latino community." @WRAL#Durham
Freeman wants to remind parents that "when children come in contact with this type of violence, their traumas come across very differently." Says parents should be alert to things like headaches, stomach aches as signs they need support.
Councilman Williams: "I don't think there can be enough ideas. We need to keep generating ideas on what can be done."
Mayor O'Neal: "Yesterday was a really hard day for the City of Durham."
She says they are doing the best they can as City leaders, "but it's not enough. And it's going to take a whole lot more of us."

BREAKING from the #Durham City Council work session:
Per mayor, an unnamed council member is under investigation for apparently telling a developer that he/she would support a project in exchange for a donation to that council member's campaign. @WRAL
O'Neal says the developer reported the offer to City staff, and the City Attorney alerted Council members on 3/13/2023.
O'Neal says she immediately reached out to the UNC School of Government for assistance on how to handle this. #Durham@WRAL
O'Neal says the City Attorney met with members of City Council to discuss the allegations, and the consensus is that the "allegations are incredibly disturbing" and may constitute criminal activity, and could lead to criminal consequences.
The shooting happened near N Buchanan Blvd/Hudson Ave.
Police say surviving victim made it to his parents who took him to the hospital, where he informed authorities two others had been shot. Officers used K9s, drones, and found the addt’l victims.
NEW: In a response to a public records request I filed, #UNC just sent me a letter that Hussman School Dean Susan King sent to #NikoleHannahJones in February.
It highlights elements of Hannah-Jones' offer, responsibilities to which she agreed, and info about tenure.
(THREAD)
In the letter, Dean King writes:
“…the Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor & Provost has allocated a very generous start-up package of $100,000 to support your work and which may be used for research, professional activity, teaching support and student engagement.”
“You will receive a relocation compensation lump sum payment in the amount of $9,000 in consideration of the costs of transitioning to employment in Chapel Hill...”
NOW: #UNC campus groups - Black Student Movement, Carolina Black Caucus, Black Graduate and Professional Student Association - are holding a news conference about “next steps for UNC’s Black community.” This comes after #NikoleHannahJones controversy and police chief resignation.
Speakers from BSM are talking about the 2021 priorities. They are under two umbrellas -- safety and equity.
Under safety, they are asking for anti-racist alerts, full-time Black counselors trained in racial trauma, increase of Black staff in Title IX & the Women's Center. #UNC
They are also asking for the immediate termination of Officer Rahsheem Holland, who we learned yesterday was promoted to interim Chief, since former Chief David Perry resigned. UNC did not give a reason for his resignation.
I’ve received a number of questions about what’s in the court docs from the #SilentSam agreement between the Sons of Confederate Veterans and the UNC System/Board of Governors. I went to the Orange Co Courthouse Wednesday to pull the files, and I’m attaching pics. (THREAD)
Samuel Oliver-Bruno is in this van, in ICE custody. Bruno has been living in sanctuary in #Durham church for 11 months. Today, he left for ICE appointment, as he seeks deferred deportation. At that appointment, he was arrested. Church members, clergy, blocking van. @WRAL#WRAL
Several people here, at least, have said they are willing to get arrested in their efforts to protect Oliver-Bruno. #WRAL@WRAL
Oliver-Bruno’s son was just arrested by a Wake County Sheriff’s deputy. Deputy says he was arrested for assaulting an ICE agent. @WRAL#WRAL
