The Belgian Chief of Staff has deemed it unthinkable that Belgium will provide F-16s to Ukraine. When asked about the possibility of supplying ammunition, he replied that this is unfeasible due to Belgium's own shortage of ammunition and the necessity to invest in infrastructure.
Belgium allocates 1.19% of its GDP to its defence budget. Given that there is a separate budget for supporting Ukraine, it's a mystery why Belgium's outdated military infrastructure is being used as an excuse for withholding support.
In all fairness, the reason is quite clear. Belgium is simply unwilling to offer the level of support expected for Ukraine, and thus resorts to such excuses as a way to mask its reluctance.
There are a number of you saying one shouldn't criticize Belgium for not delivering enough armament to Ukraine because they don't have a lot themselves.
...
The Netherlands has donated 85+ tanks to Ukraine and is looking to buy dozens more while not owning any tanks themselves.
This isn't your typical Dutch-Belgian rivalry. Whether it's supporting Ukraine or bolstering the strength of its own armed forces, Belgium is running an absolute shitshow.
So don't give me that 'stop bullying Belgium' crap. Other countries are investing billions into their armed forces to meet emerging threats. Belgium's Ministry of Defence just paid ESA €100 million to so that Europe's next astronaut would be Belgian.
