I’m a leeds resident and work and raise my family in Leeds. Today @JustStop_Oil are planning on slow walking the roads of Leeds to traffic delays and disruption. There aim in for the the UK government to stop expanding the fossil fuel industry.
Here are my thoughts.
(1) We need to wake up the hard truth that we really are in a climate and ecological emergency. In the words of the @antonioguterres ‘humanity is on the highway to to climate hell with its foot on the accelerator’
We are currently 1.2 degrees above pre industrial temperatures and heading into a world, even if we stick to governmental targets of 2.4 degrees. This is a world of mass migration, mass starvation and societal collapse.
In this probable future Leeds, with the lifetimes of some of our youngest citizens, our kids and grandchildren, will face collapse, foot shortages and mass sufferings.
This future will be locked in unless things change quickly. In words of Sir David King ‘What we do in the next 2-3 years will determine the future of humanity’
(2) Recognise the root of this existential threat is due to the fossil fuel industry.
This means that to have a liveable future we still have an opportunity to rapidly transition from fossil fuels.
Quite simply we should stop expanding the fossil fuel industry.
(3) Despite numerous warnings from experts the UK government are putting their foot on the accelerator of climate breakdown by expanding the fossil fuel industry. As @antonioguterres says ‘: “Nothing could be more clear or present than the danger of fossil fuel expansion.’
(4) The aims of @JustStop_Oil are rational, ethical and are in keeping with a liveable future. Whereas the aims of the fossil fuel companies and those in cahoots with them (UK government and financial services) are unethical and unjust.
(5) @JustStop_Oil have tried a number of different ways of raising this issue@(actions) I don’t agree with all of them but they really are fighting for our collective futures. They are motivated by love and truth.
So if your angry today. Please channel that anger against the fossil fuel industry and those who support the genocidal future which they offer. Let your anger be channeled into peaceable action. What can you do to help avoid the worst of what may be?
Thanks for likes/retweets. If i had my time again I would correct typos. My excuse. In hospital with fever on a drip—i’ll be fine though— but pleased to assist with justice shaped tweeted.
So much is locked and in, there is much to grieve.Yet we must fight for a liveable future

In the words of @antonioguterres UN SecGeneral ‘We are on the highway to climate hell with our foot on the accelerator’ and ‘We face a direct existential threat’.
Already the worlds most vulnerable are suffering due to extreme weather, drought, floods.
I understand that @JustStop_Oil have put paint on the front of Barclays bank.
Good citizens of Leeds.
This may not be your cup of yorkshire tea but do remember that @Barclays are the worst climate offending bank in Europe by financially supporting fossil fuel expansion.
@antonioguterres said that ‘We are on the highway to climate hell with our foot on the accelerator’ Barclays are profiteering from a climate breakdown. A future which in all probability, and without major systemic change, will mean that Yorkshire will face mass suffering.
@JustStop_Oil are simply seeking to stop the government from going against ethics and justice by opening new fossil fuel infrastructure. They want a liveable future for our children and grandchildren. So do I.
@churchofengland@gregorycentreCX@JustinWelby@selvaratnam@MarkPowley1 (2) We need to be prepared in the coming years for a huge increase in CLIMATE GRIEF. We need churches which offer both hope and opportunities to lament. We need to be wary of hopium (a way of being which distracts from reality)
