Now that Prophet Jerome's little charade has been indirectly revealed via his associations with money-laundering pro Uebert Angel, I'll stop biting my tongue and share some 💫thoughts💫 on this entire rigmarole.
Now, as you MIGHT know, Sri Lanka's been in deep economic shit since 2020. If Covid-ridden 2021 wasn't bad enough, fuel and electricity shortages hit by Feb 2022. The poor have been suffering this whole time, but particularly badly in 2022.
It takes a unique brand of elitism and class-blindness as a religious institution, to POSSESS excess funds of Rs 3bn, and CHOOSE to spend it on an ostentatious building rather than on relief.
If you think this is an unfair take, think about how much ruckus we kicked up when the president wanted to spend Rs. 200mn on Independence day.
Yeah. PJ spent 15x that amount on his shiny lil dome.
Christianity - or at least, the Christianity I learned - is predicated on giving back, on generosity, and on frugality. Parables of the Good Samaritan etc show us this.
If you have nothing to give, you are supposed to give the clothes on your back.
Nobody's perfect. We all consume more than we should and give less than we ought.
But if you had Rs 3bn to spare, I'd like to think that you'd put some of it into tangibly supporting the vulnerable, rather than building a party hall for your buddies.
Religious groups - particularly Pj's brand - need to do some hard rethinking. On their profit model, on their principles, and most importantly on the people they associate themselves with.
Given Uebert's history, I'm rather curious to trace the origins of Pj's 3bn.
Not to mention: associations of PJ and Uebert with our favourite corrupt conman and architect of this entire economic crisis, MR himself 🥰.
