...its our currency so lets start with the paper:

Accepted just Thu its available online already today

Zoltán Kolláth identified Sölktäler Naturpark (village of Mößna) in Austria as one of the best dark sky sites in Europe

all-sky images below

1/x
we trace the changes in the natural color spectrum of the night sky with spectral radiance measurements

Sölktal has a broad continuum and the natural lines but hardly any spectral features of LEDs or conventional lighting technology - which Zselic has

2/x
Zselic was one of the two first @IDADarkSky parks in Europe and it has amazing skies and really nice infrastructure

visitors centre with planetarium
observation spots
panoramic tower

zselicicsillagpark.hu/en.php

see also:

3/x
Sölktal has no such facilities but the sky is just a tiny bit better regarding light pollution (potentially also due to the topography of the alps around)

we call that this should become a dark sky reference sites, encourage others to find equally unpolluted sites

4/x
and that these sites should become highly protected regarding light immissions and monitored with sensitive spectral equipment in the long run

we will learn more about the colour of the night sky and spectral fingerprints

5/5
probably forgot some buzzwords #lightpollution #darkskies #airglow #spectrum

About a year ago we had the 1st #covidlockdown in Germany

I'm the stay-home homeschooling dad - my wife is a medical doctor

But I could work @ night which I do often anyway

I did measure the night sky brightness and found it had decreased compared to before lockdown (1/12)
so in March 2017 it was less bright than in 2020 (see figure for zenith brightness)

this is surprising because we would expect light emission and #lightpollution to increase like shown in the paper we co-authored with @skyglowberlin and others

advances.sciencemag.org/content/3/11/e…

(2/12)
using night-time light satellite time series data (VIIRS DNB) we saw an increase in most major towns along the route we measured

you can check such data with @skyglowberlin tool:

lighttrends.lightpollutionmap.info

this was what we eexpected (3/12)
