New to #IndyCar ovals and want to try watching them?

I've got you covered with an oval racing beginner's guide. Let's bust some myths and get you excited to watch cars go around in circles! 😉 Rows of brightly colored In...
First of all, let's talk about WHY #IndyCar races on ovals.

It's simple really: ovals are where IndyCar got its start over a century ago. Racing on ovals connects modern IndyCar to its history, and it separates it from other major open-wheel racing series. Plus it is FUN! A graphic is split in half ...
Many drivers who were initially skeptical about oval racing come around to become advocates once they learn just how complex and advanced the racing is.

It's not what it seems from the outside! Oval racing isn't right for everyone—but it might be right for you. A graphic with numerous quo...
Let's bust some myths about #IndyCar oval racing!

First up the myth that oval racing is just turning left—completely false!

Oval racing is incredibly complex. We don't have space to cover it all, but let's cover a few things you may not have known about oval racing. A graphic with two large ph...
First up: the driver isn't just sitting in the cockpit daydreaming while they slightly turn the wheel every few seconds.

A driver has tools that they *actively* use every lap (and sometimes every corner) to physically adjust the setup of the car. A graphic showing the drive...
It's hard to put into words just how complex the engineering and setup is for these cars. We're talking TRILLIONS of possible setup combinations for an IndyCar on an oval race weekend.

Miss one setting by a fraction of an inch, and you're running at the back of the pack. Oval explainer Oval explai...
Aerodynamics is always important in #IndyCar, but nowhere more important than in oval racing. There is SO much to cover in this area, but we'll just start you off with two concepts you need to understand: clean air and dirty air. Oval explainer Oval explai...
Let's bust the myth that oval racing is BORING. In fact, once you are educated and know what to look for, oval racing can be some of the most exciting events on the calendar! A graphic with two large ph...
One of the most beautiful aspects of oval racing is the unpredictability—it's not unusual for an oval winner to come from the back of the field or even a lap down. Anything can happen! A photo of colorful IndyCar...
Part of oval racing's unpredictability comes from how sensitive ovals are to both weather and track conditions. A driver can have a great car on Saturday and a terrible car on Sunday—just due to weather changes. A bright blue IndyCar zooms...
The next myth we are destroying: if you've seen one oval, you've seen them all, right?

NOPE. All ovals are *drastically* different. A graphic with two large ph...
Lumping all the ovals together under one category is like comparing apples to tennis balls—they are the same general shape, but the similarities stop there.

Let's compare just two ovals on the schedule: the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Iowa Speedway. A graphic shows a chart ove...
There are really three types of ovals you'll see on the #IndyCar schedule, and they all race drastically differently—the cars even use entirely different rear wings depending on the category! A chart explaining the diff...
Let's bust our final myth: oval racing is WAY too dangerous, right?

Well, the truth is, no racing is safe, but oval racing is actually safer than ever! A graphic with two large ph...
Driver safety starts with the driver themselves and what they wear. The first layer of protection (and information) is on their bodies. An infographic showing all ...
The #IndyCar Safety and Medical Teams are widely thought to be the best in all of motorsports—and for good reason. IndyCar has one of the few traveling, full-time, dedicated safety teams in all of racing. An infographic talking abou...

The SAFER barrier was designed in part by the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and was first installed on IndyCar tracks starting in 2002. It reduces the impact of a crash from 30-80%. An infographic explaining a...
A huge aspect of safety on oval tracks are team spotters. These team members have a bird's eye view of the action and act as a second set of eyes for the drivers on the ground. A photo of a bunch of spott...
Now that we've busted some oval myths, let's cover a few competition items you'll need to know before you watch oval racing. First of all, let's learn about how #IndyCar oval qualifying works. A flowchart explaining how ...
Now let's talk oval tires—historically and at most oval races this season, there will only be one type of tire on the ovals. But #IndyCar is testing a new alternate tire compound at Gateway this year. An infographic talking abou...
Yellow flags in #IndyCar oval racing are different from road and street racing in that EVERY yellow flag on an oval is a full-course caution with a safety car. An infographic explaining t...
Blue flag rules are also different for ovals! The important thing to remember about blue flags on ovals: they are simply a notification. A driver is not required to pull over to let faster cars through. An infographic explaining t...
We just scratched the surface of all that goes into oval racing, but, I hope this guide helped you understand a bit more about how complex, interesting, and exciting it can be!

As always, if you have any questions, drop them below. Happy to help get you answers! A close up photo of a blue,...

Okay, I finally watched the #Indy500 broadcast, and boy do I have THOUGHTS. Let's go.

🧵🧵🧵
First of all, my goodness HUGE THANK YOU to @IndyCaronNBC for all their incredible coverage over the Month of May. We had over three hours of pre-race coverage alone! 🤯

If you didn’t feel like you got enough IndyCar coverage this month, you weren't paying attention.
Overall: I give this race a solid 7.5/10. The last 50 laps were easily a 9/10 (yes, even with all those red flags).

The first half of the race was a bit of a snoozer, but that's kinda what you get with the current speedway aero package in a 500 mile race. It was expected.

I am so excited about this thread!

I asked a bunch of fellow #Indy500 veteran fans to drop their best race-day tips and advice. I mixed it with my own 25 years of race day experience, and voila! This thread was born. Chock full of Indy 500 protips—it's perfect for first-timers. A photo of the crowd at the Indy 500. You can make out a few families of mixed generations with bright blue skies in the background. Everyone is wearing brightly colored race gear and looks enthralled with the action on the track. The text overlay reads “Going to your first Indy 500? Here is some practical advice from Indy 500 veterans with decades of race day experience!”
First a bit of a disclaimer: there are as many ways to “do” the Indy 500 as there are people who go! There is no one right way to approach race day.

The advice here is what has worked for the folks I talked to, but what works for you and your group might be different! A photo of a black and red IndyCar zooms through a turn at the IMS. The background of the photo is filled with a sea of people sitting in the stands. Text overlay reads “First up: there is no one right way to do the Indy 500. I chatted with fans with decades of Indy 500 race day experience, and most everyone had different ideas on the "best" way to approach race day! But there were some themes that showed up, and that's what we're going to talk about here. overall: Treat your first trip to the Indy 500 as a fun experiment, learn as you go, take note of what you do and don't like, ...
The number one question I get is about when to leave for the track.

The general consensus from veterans is there is no such thing as too early (especially for a rookie)! As you become more experienced, you can try to time your arrival, but for now? Early is the name of the game! A blue-background infographic titled "When to leave". The left size of the graphic has pull-quotes with tips from Indy 500 veterans. Those read "There's no such thing as leaving too early on race day." "Plan to be at the gate by 10am at the latest. That way you can be in your seats to watch the pre-race." "I'd rather be at the track with a Bloody Mary in hand at 7am than stuck in traffic somewhere as the green flag flies.""Leave a full hour earlier than you THINK you'll need to leave.""Watching the IMS come to life is part of the fun of...

Last week, I was showing someone photos of my office, and they said “Wow. I never expected you to be a racing fan.” Image
*I* know racing fans are all kinds. Men, women, nonbinary. Old and young. Straight and queer. All colors. All beliefs.

But I’m regularly reminded that people outside of racing still see us as a monolith of old white men.
Looking at race crowds now versus when I was younger?

It’s been such a beautiful glow up! I used to feel so out of place (and honestly unwelcome), but now, race tracks by and large feel like home.

We still have a LONG way to go, but we’re building something great!
