A 🧵on key findings on the status of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons as of 31 December 2022, published today in the 2022 edition of the Nuclear Weapons Ban Monitor. #TPNW #nuclearban 1/12

At 31.12.2022 #TPNW had 68 states parties+26 signatories that had not yet ratified. Now 27 signatories. Only 4 more signatures/accessions needed for the Treaty to reach 50% of all states. With other supporters, total support is 70.5%. 15 states are undecided, and 43 opposed. 2/12

In 2022, the TPNW gained 9 new states parties, and 5 new signatories. Several of the other supporters have started preparations to join the Treaty. 3/12

Despite resistance from nuclear-armed states, the speed with which the #TPNW gained new states parties increased in 2022, and was not far behind the speed of some of the other key treaties on disarmament and non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. 4/12

Support for the TPNW is generally high in all regions apart from Europe. In Africa, 100% of states are now either states parties or signatories to or other supporters of the #TPNW. In Europe, 70% of states are opposed to the Treaty. 5/12

The nine nuclear-armed states continued in 2022 to refuse to sign or even engage constructively with the #TPNW. 6/12

Sweden and Finland in 2022 joined the minority of states that vote no on the annual UN General Assembly resolution on the #TPNW. 7/12.

Australia became the first country under the US "nuclear umbrella" that abstained instead of voting no on the annual UN General Assembly resolution on the TPNW. 8/12

Five states under the US "nuclear umbrella" observed the #TPNW's First Meeting of States Parties in Vienna in June 2022, showing early signs of willingness to at least engage constructively with the Treaty. 9/12

In several opposed states, political debate about whether or not to join the #TPNW was ongoing in 2022. 10/12.

All countries should sign and ratify the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. #TPNW. It's urgent. 11/12
