This is nonsense. Woke doesn’t refer to one being “awaken to the needs of others,” it was specifically in reference to being “woke” to racial injustices and activism of the black community. Its roots are in radical black activism, dating back to Marcus Garvey in the 1920s. 🧵 Image
Woke broke into mainstream culture during the 2014 Ferguson riots, when it became enmeshed with BLM and the #staywoke social media campaign. It was a call to stay focused on black activism, particularly to stay vigilant on police misconduct.
It then morphed into focusing on the plight of all marginalized communities. Woke was no longer limited to BLM. It was in the 2017 Women’s March. It included BIPOC, LGBTQ+ & eventually the broader goals of progressivism. This is when phrases like “white privilege” took off.
Woke ideology viewed history as a struggle between oppressed and oppressors, and attributed all current inequities to structural racism/sexism, etc. To combat this, it sought to group everyone into hierarchies based on their oppressor status (generally based on race and sex).
With this movement came the many whiny, annoying young activists (mostly white) who knew little about anything, but after reading a Teen Vogue article or a Robin DiAngelo book were lecturing everyone about racial inequities and checking your privilege.
Even corporations embraced it, executives would give their pronouns and identify which native tribe the land was stolen from at their conferences. Door Dash had a “black-owned businesses” section, United Airlines announced half their pilots would be women/POC. Image
It was this quasi-religious wokeness that caused a huge backlash. The right fought back by using the term in a derogatory and mocking way, to great effect. Woke was painted as political correctness reaching absurd new heights, an obsession over identity politics.
The left has recently tried to combat this stigmatization of woke. At first, they claimed woke was a made up bogeyman of the right, a term that no one can even define (nevermind they have no coherent definition of words like racist, late-stage capitalism or woman). Image
Now they seem to be embracing woke and attempting to redefine it as some generic term meaning nice and sympathetic, wanting what’s best for everyone, even loving science 😂 This is nonsense and never what it meant. Image

Now this is a whopper. @other98 et al are now sharing memes about coming together & seeing everyone as “fellow Americans” regarding Covid. Let’s take a look back at the memes they’ve shared for the past 2 years, many receipts! Starting w/Jimmy Kimmel’s “joke” about denying care.
Years of advocating for universal healthcare all of a sudden went out the window during Covid, as they cheered on bills forcing people to pay hospital bills out of pocket based on vaccination status.
Then, the cheering of banning people from even engaging in public life.

Another “mostly false” debacle, the rating which continues to be the scourge of fact checkers. In most cases (like this case) these should be “misleading” or “missing context.”
PolitiFact’s point is that Russia’s oil imports didn’t double because all imports (including crude and refined petroleum like gasoline and kerosene) rose 28%, while it was only crude that doubled.
politifact.com/factchecks/202…
Calling this false is splitting hairs on what “oil imports” mean. Some might consider crude oil imports doubling to make this statement true. It’s valid to give context that, when combining refined petroleum, this changes & let the reader decide if Bartiromo is being dishonest.

I got some pushback questioning the Snake Island and Ghost of Kyiv story (on FB). Looks like the crux of the Snake Island myth (that they died defending it) was wrong. And that myth was much more plausible than the Ghost of Kyiv.
The propaganda on both sides of the conflict is crazy, so be careful believing anything. Being confident about any facts is hubristic at this point. We are all primed to want to believe stories that inspire, shock or reinforce our biases, and the propagandists know that.
I remember visiting Scotland years ago & learning that the movie Braveheart was largely bs (Robert the Bruce was actually “Braveheart” & much of the movie based on inaccuracies or just made up). It’s a bummer as it’s a great story & one you want to believe, but it’s not factual.

This meme seems to circulate every year or so, and it’s back again, so here’s the rebuttal. It claims that the electoral college was the South’s idea and was implemented to help slave states. This is dubious at best 🧵
During the Constitutional Convention in 1787, significant division arose over how to elect the president. Initially, some delegates did propose a direct election by the people. This was championed by James Madison, a southerner, & two northerners, James Wilson & Gouverneur Morris
However, this was roundly rejected by the convention, and not because of slavery. One of the most outspoken members against direct election was Elbridge Gerry of Massachusetts, who feared that demagoguery could result in a monarch in a direct election, a common fear at the time.

This meme tacitly admits CRT in schools would misinform students about the history of racial discrimination. It lays the blame on banks without mentioning that it rested squarely on the Federal government & progressive politicians in particular. Here is the real history 🧵 Image
The following comes from The Color of Law, which covers the history of government & racial discrimination. This was written & approved by CRT sympathizers, so they can’t question the source, even though it often reads like a libertarian tract (at least until the last chapter). Image
When the G.I. Bill was adopted in 1944 it denied mortgage subsidies to black Americans. The biggest road blocks for black veterans & civilians alike, outside of Jim Crow, were put up by the Federal gov’t under progressives. To see this fully, we need to go back a bit further. Image

This is a great example of citing a study and hoping no one takes the time to read it. Unlike many media outlets, I read it! As those skeptical of these sort of memes might expect, there is much more to the story here than @DanPriceSeattle and @RoKhanna give. Image
Canada” didn’t give homeless people $7.5K, a private non-profit group Foundations For Social Change did. They have an initiative called the New Leaf project, which seeks to empower people to “move beyond homelessness.” They are hoping to rapidly expand and get new fundraising.
In 2018 they launched their first study in Vancouver w/115 participants. ~half (50) were given a one-time cash transfer of $7.5K (~$6.2K USD) & the others no cash. Some from each group were also given coaching, although it’s unclear what that entailed.
