For context, I did not live with my parents in HS, but state law req’d me to attend the school in their district, which was on the other side of town. If I didn’t lie, I had no way to get to school and would instead have ended up a HS dropout.
Many kids in my circumstances would have chosen the path of least resistance and dropped out. But I had bigger plans for my future. Not all kids have that kind of drive.
That’s also why I fought for #OpenSchools. I had no means to buy notebooks let alone a computer with internet connection in HS. I knew the stories of kids like me. I know they are likely a part of the kids who disappeared from schools during COVID.
