I love love love that the show unfurled a little bit of commentary over the last 2 episodes about how history of military conflict is whitewashed by the victor.
If you missed DS9 you may be unfamiliar with the morphogenic virus true history.
S3E6 Worf states that while Section 31 did create this virus which was devastating & lethal to the changelings, the Federation eventually distributed a cure. It seems to be believed as truth by all.
S3E7 Vadic disputes that and notes that the Federation withheld the cure - which was genocide - and only thwarted because one of their own brought the cure to the great link.
Vadic is correct. Worf is not.
Odo went against orders (he wasn't Starfleet but he was still in a command structure with Sisko at the top) and rejoined the link and healed them despite the Federation/Starfleet clearly stating they would NOT be distributing the cure.
Is Worf knowingly lying in his episode? I'm not sure. He was present on DS9 and honestly need to rewatch to know for sure. Maybe bug some of the Picard folks. Either way it's the lie that Starfleet propagates.
Also shoutout to the writers for making Beverly re-consider a similar strategy at the top of episode 7 where she even notes to do this, to develop a biological weapon, would effectively be genocide and then for Vadic to confront them with truth that the Federation did it before
And how episode 7 took a delightful villain, who ate up her scenery and would have been great even without the other reveals, and gave us a morally complicated one. I know some folks don't love this gray area Star Trek but man I love it.
and when we say "Star Trek has always been political"
this is what we mean
because if even the Federation can be guilty of this, what viewers should sit with is questions about the history of imperialism and warfare in their own nation
