This Friday, April 7, I will deliver the James H. Steele Lecture @UTHealthHouston @TXMedCenter when I will discuss our vaccine program and my forthcoming new book with @JHUPress
So my question is: where is the accountability for elected officials who generated/spread disinformation about Covid vaccines causing 200,000 Americans to needlessly lose their lives because they refused vaccines (mostly red states) during the delta + BA.1 waves in 2021-22
My new book with @JHUPress details how 200,000 Americans mostly in Southern red states including FL became victims of an organized, politically-motivated antivaccine/antiscience campaign from elected officials on the right, together with Fox News a.co/d/3U0Q4KN
What we’re now hearing from people like like in this clip is an attempt at a whitewash. They caused unnecessary deaths and long Covid on an epic scale and now they want to say it’s the vaccines and the scientists who caused this. My new book shuts that down.
1/n New @ScienceAdvances human activity including agriculture, mining, deforestation are key drivers for emerging coronavirus infections this 21st century: SARS 2002, MERS 2012, COVID 2019, and likely a 4th before the end of this decade… science.org/doi/10.1126/sc…
3/n I first wrote about Anthropocene forces as a disease driver in @PLOS@PLOSNTDs in 2016, it’s not only coronaviruses. The framework also applies to arbovirus infections such as dengue or Zika; Ebola, and many others journals.plos.org/plosntds/artic…
Our @TexasChildrens vaccine center is working furiously to develop a low cost patent-free universal Covid vaccines for global health. We’ve had recent breakthroughs on this, but like our Covid vaccine 100 million doses administered in India Indonesia attracting funding is tough
As pointed out below, everyone, including the far right and the progressives, are so committed to the multinational pharma companies, taking their lobbying money that we’re mostly on our own. But we’ll keep persevering.
1/n Many thanks @NatashaZouves for hosting me @NewsNation re: potential FDA authorization of a 2nd bivalent Covid booster. I’m enthusiastic about this given for the monovalent boosters we’ve seen waning protection vs both infection/hospitalization..
2/n …waning protection after 5-6 months and for those early adopters we’re about there. It’s also true that only about 17% of Americans took the 1st bivalent booster so the uptake of the 2nd may only be around 10%..
3/n but for those who want it especially the immunocompromised they should have that option. Also important to note that this should not affect a possible additional booster in the fall if Covid becomes seasonal.
Interesting that in 1837 under much more intense pressure, Texas President Sam Houston decided against sending the Army of the Republic of Texas across the border to attack Mexico. I’ll go with Sam Houston…
