We believe that transparency is the first step to accountability.
So every week, we submit public records requests to local, state, and federal agencies.
Here’s a roundup of requests we’ve recently filed. #FOIA
We filed public records requests to investigate whether and to what extent Florida Gov. DeSantis may be influencing legislative agendas in Texas.

Florida Surgeon General Ladapo’s harmful and inaccurate claims about Covid-19 vaccines have drawn significant scrutiny.
We obtained communications from the fall of 2021 that show Ladapo setting up meetings with Covid-19 conspiracy theorists. documentcloud.org/documents/2373…
A month after Ladapo was appointed by Gov. DeSantis, the editor of a conservative local news outlet complained to Ladapo about a possible local mask mandate in Gainesville, suggesting that Ladapo present to U. of Florida doctors because “the mask cult is strong” in the UF system.
Ladapo copied his staff and said, “let’s pls discuss how I can be helpful.”
Conservative political leaders across the country are launching attacks on public education by limiting what instructors can teach about racism and gender.
Here’s how we’re using public records requests to investigate these egregious attacks. #FoiaFriday
Some states are passing measures to restrict the rights of students, drum up political support among aggrieved conservative parents, and whitewash and deteriorate public education, ultimately shoring up school choice movements. apnews.com/article/utah-s…
Often under the banner of “parents’ rights,” and taking cues from far-right groups like Moms for Liberty, these efforts threaten to leave underrepresented minorities behind and bring classrooms into the arena of right-wing culture wars. slate.com/news-and-polit…
Cleta Mitchell, a lawyer involved in the effort to overturn the 2020 election, was given a seat on the advisory board of the Election Assistance Commission in 2021. We obtained emails in which she criticized the increased use of mail-in voting. americanoversight.org/in-the-documen…
Through our lawsuit for public records, we uncovered correspondence between Mitchell and right-wing groups from 2020 as well as 2022, after she joined the board, in which she used unfounded claims of voter fraud to oppose expanded access to absentee and mail-in voting.
“[E]very crazy thing the left wants to do they will try to get done at this time, using the virus as the reason,” she wrote in March 2020.
NEW: We submitted a brief urging the Wisconsin Court of Appeals to uphold court decisions ordering the Assembly’s Office of Special Counsel — which conducted the discredited investigation of the 2020 election — to produce related public documents. americanoversight.org/american-overs…
The OSC was created by the Wisconsin State Assembly in 2021 to investigate the results of the 2020 presidential election, despite overwhelming evidence that those results were accurate.
In response to several open records requests from American Oversight, the OSC has asserted — and continues to assert on appeal, even after the records have been released pursuant to court order — that it can withhold all its records from the public. americanoversight.org/investigation/…
In the weeks after the 2020 election, the Trump admin. forced out several high-level DOD officials, replacing them with loyalists. Members of Pentagon advisory boards were also forced out.
New records we obtained include emails about a few of those last-minute discussions.
We obtained emails from Jan. 6, 2021, in which officials discussed the appointment of loyalist Kash Patel, then acting Defense Secretary Christopher Miller’s chief of staff, to the Defense Policy Board. americanoversight.org/document/dod-r…
Patel was named to the board on Trump’s last full day in office, but was removed during the first weeks of the Biden administration.
