Cleta Mitchell, a lawyer involved in the effort to overturn the 2020 election, was given a seat on the advisory board of the Election Assistance Commission in 2021. We obtained emails in which she criticized the increased use of mail-in voting.

Through our lawsuit for public records, we uncovered correspondence between Mitchell and right-wing groups from 2020 as well as 2022, after she joined the board, in which she used unfounded claims of voter fraud to oppose expanded access to absentee and mail-in voting.
“[E]very crazy thing the left wants to do they will try to get done at this time, using the virus as the reason,” she wrote in March 2020.

NEW: We submitted a brief urging the Wisconsin Court of Appeals to uphold court decisions ordering the Assembly’s Office of Special Counsel — which conducted the discredited investigation of the 2020 election — to produce related public documents.

The OSC was created by the Wisconsin State Assembly in 2021 to investigate the results of the 2020 presidential election, despite overwhelming evidence that those results were accurate.
In response to several open records requests from American Oversight, the OSC has asserted — and continues to assert on appeal, even after the records have been released pursuant to court order — that it can withhold all its records from the public.

In the weeks after the 2020 election, the Trump admin. forced out several high-level DOD officials, replacing them with loyalists. Members of Pentagon advisory boards were also forced out.

New records we obtained include emails about a few of those last-minute discussions.
We obtained emails from Jan. 6, 2021, in which officials discussed the appointment of loyalist Kash Patel, then acting Defense Secretary Christopher Miller’s chief of staff, to the Defense Policy Board.
