As we are heading to another Tamil Festival in few days, thought of looking back what Kollywood has offered this time those days. Probably 50s to 80s what albums we have experienced, in this thread.

While Deepavali is premier race in films release, Pongal had its share, which we have seen earlier, Tamil New Year's day also had its own releases. Though this festival release culture has come down drastically post 80s.

Slowly people started to release films one or two days prior to the festival date and it got diluted further as we see no releases happens except Deepavali. Even Deepavali gets one or two movies these days

Let us clock back to this day to see what albums (movies) released. Starting with 50s, 1957 had 2 releases on this day. Maya Bazaar Tamil version got released as the Telugu version came out much earlier

One another exemplary album for GR released on this day in 1957. Vanangamudi, written by AK Velan directed by P Pulliah with Ganesan, Savitri and other top stars of that time.

What a brilliant album by GR. One of the finest MD, TFM has produced. Master in carnatic based numbers. Look at Vanangamudi, you have the lovely Keervani by TMS 'Omkaaramaai Vilangum Naadham' priceless 'Mohana punnagai seididum nilave' by evergreen TMS PS combo

And this one sung by great MLV in Suddhadanyasi is timeless classic. What a composition and pretty Rajasulochana on screen

1958 had one release on this day and that is enough for us to speak for decades. SS Vasan's magnum opus 'Vanjikottai Vaaliban'
The two pretty ladies of that time bringing their best on screen while P Leela and Jikki equally bring their voices to take this song to another level.

One another time let us experience this

1960s had one notable movie. On this day 1968, CVR directorial Romcom 'Galatta Kalyanam'. What a lovely comedy with great songs by MM. Both CVS and Gopu writing it together.

Vaali wrote all the lyrics in this album and JJ moved on from MGR camp to pair with others. Vaali, knowing for his pun, gave a fitting pallavi 'Nalla Idam Nee Vandha Idam' in the duet.

This album has one another excellent duet 'Mella Varum Kaatru'. TMS and PS, what a combo

Two other songs my favorite in this 'Uravinil 50 50' with Essamma slaying it effortlessly. The best reserved for 'Engal Kalyanam Galatta Kalynam' shot in Anna Nagar Tower.

What an orchestration and MM launching his favorite instrument 'Whistle' in the prelude. And the rhythm patterns, counter points. Just outstanding.
Knowing CVS, song sequence is well made.

1970s had 3 releases in 1974 on this day. 'Vani Rani' musical score by KVM. This lovely melody, 70s Balu is a earworm even today.

With this album, VJ rose to household name across TN. What fragrance this song spread for rest of our music life.

Shankar Ganesh gave 'Vellikizhamai Viratham' for Devar Films. This movie was a runaway hit. All written by A Maruthakasi, this TMS PS duet is very sweet.

Come to 80s, 1980 and 1983 had one release 'Natchathiram' remade from Telugu by Sripriya and 'Imaigal' composed by GA. Natchathiram scored by SG basically retained the telugu tunes. Imaigal had one MV stunner

Loosely based on Mayamalava Gowla, MV in his elements and PS accompanying. What a lullaby.
GA what an under rated MD. This is the first song by MV for Ganesan, if my memory is right.

1985 had two grand albums on this day. Rajini starrer 'Naan Sigappu Manithan' and Motherland Pictures 'Udaya Geetham', both albums by Raja. What roller coaster 80s with Raja just ruling it all over

Watched 'Naan Sigappu Manithan' day 1 evening show at the biggest theater in Trichy those days, Kalaiarangam. Just imagine the undercurrent. The rhetorical 'Gandhi Desame Kaaval Illaya' by Vairamuthu, Rajini in white & white on screen and paisa vasool for the full house

But the best was reserved for this number, Pulamaipithan pitching the lyrics, Balu, what a legend.

The way he sing anupallai 'vidkaalai velli meene' goosebumps

#TFM Let us rewind what happened on this day from 60s to 80s in this Day 2 thread. 1950s had 2 releases on this day, MGR starring 'Madurai Veeran' and AK Velan script 'Sadhaaram'. P Bhanumathy was the heroine in both and Jaambavan GR gave gem of songs

Maruthakasi wrote all songs in Sadhaaram.

And what a splendid Shanmuka Priya from one and only TMS.

Madurai Veeran was another master class from GR.
Padmini robbed many hearts and this Jonpuri 😀

Charukesi belongs to only GR. And you have MLV on vocals 🙏

Papimmaa what a graceful, pretty dancer 😀

1960s had around 3 releases on this day. Ganesan, Krishnan Panju teamed up to give one of memorable experience 'Deivapiravi'. Written by another legend KSG, musical score by R Sudarsanam.

KJR hits in this album 'Kaalai Manasu' 'Ivar Kaana avar paanaa' and earworm 'Thaara Thaara Vandhaara'. This CSJ-SJ number become instant hit. Ganesan and Pappimaa on screen bringing the best chemistry

Apart from music, this scene with all the 3 legends, what a performance.

MGR Devar combination gave 'Thaayai Kaatha Thanayan' in 1962 composed by KVM. Kannadasan penned all the songs turned out to be one another best album by this team.

TMS and MGR - Never ever again

And MGR Saroja Devi, what a pair on screen, went on to stole many hearts.

This album has few other hit numbers like, PS Solo 'Kattu Rani Kottaiyele' with TMS another melody 'Kaveri Karai irukku' 'Perai Sollalaamaa' etc

Moving to 1970s, Mr Sampath and Raman Thediya Seethai released on this day in 1972. MSV scored for Mr Sampath, a Cho directorial. 70s Balu is a beast I tell you.

There is one another number by TMS and Manorama in this 'Alankaram Podhumadi'. All penned by Vaali.

Raman Thediya Seethai, starring MGR JJ with MGR's favorite director PN. All the songs are chartbusters with both Kannadasan and Vaali sharing the lyrical honours

LRE, what a versatile singer

TMS and PS gave tilting 'Nalladhu Kanne' but this one by TMS with Vasantha is gem.

1976 had a couple of release. SPM directorial 'Kalangalil Aval Vasantham' and 'Varaprasadam'. KVA musical score by Vijaya Bhaskar, one VJ number is really mellifluous 'Manamagale Un Manavarai Kolam'

1980's predominantly, the music scene has quickly which everyone knows. There were 6 releases on this day in 1988 and almost all the MDs got to score one each. Will pick non IR in this, Urimai Geetham scored by Manoj Gyan, Chandrabose gave 'Thai Mel Aanai'

And this under rated album, VSN, what a composer

Lastly in today's thread IR scored 2 stunning albums, 1984 Naan Paadum Paadal for Motherland Pictures, and 1988, Rajini starrer, runaway hit, Guru Shishyan.

In 50s, notable album by KVM for Sampoorna Ramayanam. CSJ's 'Indru Poi Naalai Vaaraai' and this gem from CSJ and Trichy Loganathan

1960s has many notable and memorable albums. 1962 gave Bhim Singh Ganesan teaming for 'Padithal Mattum Podhuma' with MSV TKR. Whole album is brilliant. 1963, P Madhavan debuted for Mani Osai and this song is evergreen

On this day in 1965, what a brilliant debut by JJ, Srikanth, Murthy & Nirmala with Sridhar and what a wonderful album from MSV TKR

Kannadasan penned all the songs

1967 had two releases on this day. KSG's Ganesan starrer 'Pesum Deivam' scored by KVM and 'Pattanathil Bhootham' scored by R Govardhanam. Both turned out to be evergreen albums till date.

Vaali wrote all songs in Pesum Deivam. What a lovely number by LRE, Soolamangalam

Vaali, what a lyricist. This is my hot favorite and often people credit this to Kannadasan cc @veeba6

And KVM reserved his best for this Kanada

Kannadasan wrote all for Pattanathil Bhootham. Wonderful album and many know about 'Andha Sivagami Maganidam' anecdote. This number is my favorite in that album.

1971 had three releases on this day. Interestingly 3 different scripts. Savitri's own production and directorial, which ended her film career 'Praptham' musical score by MSV

Chitralaya's CVR directorial RomCom 'Sumathi En Sundari' scored by MSV again and KRV starrer P Madhavan directorial 'Sabatham' musical score by GKV

And again and again, Balu was a beast in 70s. What a wonderful singer.

Sumathi En Sundari - whole album is gem. People always talk about 'Pottu Vaitha Mugamo' and arguably Balu's best, but PS has sung two outstanding numbers in this. Especailly , @circusthuppaki often quotes this to me

1979 had 3 interesting releases on this day. KB's musical journey 'Ninaithale Inikkum', Devar films Shankar Ganesh musical 'Thayillamal Naanillai' and Bharathiraja's 'Pudhiya Vaarpugal'. What a time TFM had.

Lot of discussion had about NI and PV, let us look at this under rated number by Balu

In 80s, 1989 had around 5 to 6 movies, Kamal's Aboorva Sagodharargal, Parthipan's Pudhiya Paadhai both did well. 1987 also had around 4 movies, Makkal En Pakkam scored by Chandra Bose, TR's Oru Thayin Sabatham,

As mentioned as we are not looking at IRs, let us see some non-IR albums prominent albums, Sangili and Simla Special both released on this day musical score by MSV
