Hey guys, I research and write on language, history, and identity in South India. I focus on minority languages, and have been published in The Caravan, The Hindu, Newslaundry, Deccan Herald, etc.

I'm looking for more opportunities to write on these themes - thanks & please RT!
Last May, I wrote about about the decline of the historical Moḍī script, once widely used to write #Marathi alongside Devanagari and an essential part of its literary culture. Notions of "one language, one script" led to its near complete demise. #म

Last March, I wrote about one of my absolute favorite multilingual regions, Tulu Nadu in southwest coastal India, where #Tulu, #Kannada, #Konkani, and more are spoken.

This tiny strip of land is a prime example of how multilingualism can shape culture.

I was asked for an English translation of my thread on #Prakrit an Sanskrit. Here it goes (well, at least partially!

The relation between Samskrta #Sanskrt and various Prakrtas #Prakrit is a subject that has been debated widely. Since #Kannada in its long history has been influenced by Samskrta and Prakrita(s), I thought of this note.
References in Sanskrit state " प्रकृतिः संस्कृतम्, तत्र भवेत् पाकृतं" - implying it is Samskrta that was the originator, or natural language, and those varieties (of it) that arose from it were called Prakritas.

@vrishchikan @NChozhan @zaynarifx @nyasarn @HRajaBJP Vedas...? Few used to say that ‘Vedas’ are the most ancient literature. Vedas comprises the spoken or sung literature, which continues with the oral tradition of the #Sanskrit epics. As Sanskrit does not have a script of its own it even not counted as a language.
@vrishchikan @NChozhan @zaynarifx @nyasarn @HRajaBJP #Sanskrit is an European language and Hindi's mother land is Turkey.
Still few people like you still believes that the Aryan invasion is myth, phys.org/news/2012-08-t…
@vrishchikan @NChozhan @zaynarifx @nyasarn @HRajaBJP Westerners became interested in it after Sir William Jones "discovered" #Sanskrit , as it were, and then extolled its virtues at a meeting of the 'Bengal Asiatick Society' in 1786. Taking cues from Jones, linguists began looking for links between Sanskrit and other languages.

Perhaps the best example of #AmalgamationArchitecture and the cultural inclusiveness of #Hyderabad under the Nizam is #OsmaniaUniversity Arts College founded in 1918. It's the 1st Indian university to have Urdu (a modern language) as medium of instruction (as opposed to Persian).
Under the last Nizam, Osman Ali Pasha, #Hyderabad was thriving as a center of learning, innovation and technological advancement, free from the dark shadow of colonialism that gripped most of the Subcontinent. Hyderabad was quite insulated from India...
...and developed its own culture, architectural styles, cuisine, and most importantly, language. People from India were referred to as Hindustani and so was their language. The language of Hyderabad was Dakhani (of Deccan), which is very distinct from Hindi or Urdu...

Quintessential Indian dish from southern India 'Dosa' (दोसा) has its origin in #Tamil word tōcai = rice flat pancake, which has reached us via #Kannada. dōse, #Tulu dōsè, & #Malayalam dōśa. Interestingly this Dosa was also borrowed in Middle Indo-Aryan as dhosaka धोसक.
Surprisingly this avatar of Dosa i.e. Dhosak धोसक survives in Eastern India in the form of ḍhuskā ढुस्का (a popular rice-lentils dish of Jharkhand & Odisa). This was in area of language contact between North Dravidian (like Kurux) and Indo-Aryan languages.
Perhaps the word Dosa has its origin in Proto South Dravidian *dōc-ai.
Dhosaka has been attested in classical Sanskrit in MIA period (P. K. Gode, Indian Linguistics 16. 226-31).
