The forgotten hero Madan Lal Dhingra (18 February 1883 - 17 August 1909)
Despite being the first Indian to kill a British officer William Hutt Curzon in England, Madan Lal Dhingra has failed to find a memorial befitting his stature even after 115 years of his martyrdom. Image
His remains were returned to India in December 1976 after being buried in a UK prison's cemetery. His statue was placed in a green space close to a bus stop.Additionally, the city's bus station carries his name. The martyr's bust may be seen close to the Town Hall structure.
The demand for a proper memorial for the martyr who served as an inspiration to people like Bhagat Singh and Udham Singh is still unmet. ML Dhingra Samarak Samiti has made many requests, but the memorial has yet to be built despite the MC having set aside land for it few years ago
As in previous years, no state-level event was held to commemorate Dhingra's martyrdom day. The Punjab government should make a memorial dedicated to Madan Lal Dhingra ji, so that it can inspire generations to come.
Madan Lal Dhingrawas born on 18 September 1883 in Amritsar, India, in an educated and affluent Hindu Punjabi Khatri family. His father, Dr. Ditta Mal Dhingra, was a civil surgeon, and Madan Lal was one of eight children (7 sons and 1 daughter). All of the sons studied abroad
Dhingra studied at Amritsar in MB Intermediate College until 1900. He then went to Lahore to study at the Government College University. In May 1906 ML Dhingra went to London to pursue mechanical engineering from University College, London.
Vinayak Savarkar did play a critical role in moulding Dhingra, the revolutionary. In 1907, Shyamji K. left for Paris, and Savarkar became the de-facto leader of India house. It must be noted that Dhingra had no prior experience of operating pistols, and had remained

completely sequestered from politics during his younger days in Amritsar. By 1909, Dhingra had become a proficient shooter. He wanted to assassinate Lord Curzon (Viceroy) and Lord Morley (Sec. of State) and only marginally missed accomplishing his goal.
He fulfilled his goal late at night on the 1st of July 1909. On the evening of 1 July 1909, Dhingra, along with a large number of Indians and Englishmen had gathered to attend the annual 'At Home' function hosted by the Indian National Association at the Imperial Institute.
When Curzon Wyllie, was leaving the hall with his wife, Dhingra fired five shots right at his face, four of which hit their target.C. Lalcaca, a Parsee doctor who tried to save Curzon Wyllie, died of Dhingra's 6th and 7th bullets, which he fired bcz Lalcaca had come between them.
