A few months ago, I lost quite a few friends over my contention that tracking collars were being abused to the detriment of #YellowstoneParkWolves. People called me a liar when I said the telemetry was being leaked, adding to the issue of habituated wolves.
Now, @outsidemagazine has outed the Wolf Project for doing exactly what I said. This is an abuse of wildlife. It has made these most visible wolves on earth vulnerable to the killers waiting outside an invisible boundary beyond the park. All animal lovers should be outraged!
Compounding this issue, once one group sets up on the wolves, everyone in the park knows & soon dozens more people have become complicit in making these #wolves easy for the killers to execute. It's an environmental crime being fomented by people that claim to love wolves.
I have written more about this avoidable tragedy and the complicity of wildlife photographers and the Yellowstone Wolf Project here: medium.com/@owstarr/the-t…
🐺@fidogsbark this is a review of your collar by a former TechCrunch writer who’s covered hundreds of apps.
I’ve been using the Fi collar for months on IOS. It has one fatal flaw.
2/It doesn’t provide tracking information when I’m likely to need it most.
Here’s the scenario and the failure:
Backcountry camping. No cell service. Dog and I left home together and Fi confirmed this with a notification.
No service at the trailhead or anywhere on route.
3/ I’ve already downloaded maps from both Avenza and AllTrails Pro because each app has different strengths.
So long as these maps are loaded, even with no Internet connection, the GPS data allows me to see precisely where I’m at. This capability is baked into the phone.
