Here is a list of political prisoners in Russia who have passed away since February 2023
February 16, 2024: Alexei Navalny (born 1976),
Putin's main opponent, who was serving a sentence for his political activities.
He died in the correctional colony of special regime "Polar Wolf" (IK-3).
January 31, 2024: Viktor Demchenko (born 1952), a citizen of Ukraine, a civil hostage.
He was accused of espionage and participation in a terrorist community. He died in a prison hospital from a stroke.
On February 16, Alexei Navalny, who was serving a 19-year sentence in the strict regime colony ( located 60 km north of the Polar Circle), passed away.
The announcement of Navalny's death appeared on the website of the Federal Penitentiary Service (FSIN)
Soon after, the website stopped working, and Telegram channels published screenshots of the announcement.
The official message states that Navalny "felt unwell after a walk, almost immediately losing consciousness." The medical staff of the colony and the "emergency medical service" were unable to save the politician, and the "causes of death are being established."
