As I tweeted in October and have spoken publicly about since (to an audience including academics, UK officials, and activists) two of the three men publicly associated with the 'Chinese police stations' in the UK TOGETHER had lunch with Boris Johnson in 2021.
"A Chinese businessman linked to a “secret police station” in London has organised Tory fundraising dinners and been photographed with party leaders, The Times can reveal."
"Ruiyou Lin, 40, runs a takeaway ordering platform in Croydon from an office address which hosts an alleged overseas Chinese police station."
"As well as providing desk space for the staff of the All Eat app owned by Lin, the address appears on a list of “overseas service stations for police and overseas Chinese affairs” set up by the public security bureau from the Chinese city of Fuzhou in the province of Fujian."
Buckle up & prepare to be launched on a hypersonic journey thru the weird world of 🇬🇧's Confucius Institutes (CIs). Funded by the 🇨🇳 government & based inside 30 British universities, this is a crash course in why not to let authoritarian regimes into centres of learning.
The money: we identified c. £33.5 million and reckon there’s up to £10 million still undeclared. The majority comes direct from the Chinese government. The CIs are jointly run by the British host university and a Chinese partner.

I’ll skip some issues we treat in the report: the place of the CIs within the CCP propaganda system; the structure of the legal agreements, etc...
One key finding: we are 99.99% certain most CIs **have been operating in breach of British law**
🚩UK-CHINA NEWS 🚩 Out this week: a new report on the influence of the Chinese Communist Party in the world's media. I am co-author of a 10,000-word section on 🇬🇧. This thread summarises our findings. It turns out that *money talks*. Buckle up to find out what it says. 1/31
First of all, here is the link to the full report published by Freedom House, a think tank funded mostly by the US government. Of 30 countries studied, the UK received the joint 2nd highest score for the range of CCP influence efforts observed. freedomhouse.org/report/beijing…

That’s noteworthy, & no coincidence considering the unprecedented Conservative-led ‘golden era’ of UK-China relations in the 2010s. But anyone remotely plugged in can see that the British media is hardly pro-CCP. Since 2020, things have changed dramatically. 3/31
🚩CONFUCIUS INSTITUTES🚩 Telegraph reports our discovery of evidence suggesting that there is ethnic and political discrimination in the recruitment process for the Institutes, which takes place partly in China. telegraph.co.uk/news/2022/08/1…

Background: Confucius Institutes (CIs) are run and funded by the Chinese government and Chinese universities, but based in universities in other countries. There are 30 Confucius Institutes in British universities, from LSE to Edinburgh.

Unlike the British Council or Alliance Française, which exist in standalone offices/centres, CIs can trade on the name of prestigious academic institutions and operate under their aegis. Our full report, out in September, will reveal just why that can be problematic…

"Taiwan on Friday blamed "political considerations" for the cancellation of WorldPride 2025 Taiwan after it said the organisers had insisted the word "Taiwan" be removed."
"Taiwan's southern city of Kaohsiung had been due to host WorldPride 2025 Taiwan, after winning the right from global LGBTQ rights group InterPride."
