SECRETS & POWER: CHINA IN THE UK

Check this clip, where we caught someone spying on Hong Kong dissidents on camera!

From revelations about high-tech research to political connections, this doc will blow your mind - a must watch.

(Spoilers:) The film, which I worked on, exposes:

💥A ‘Chinese refugee advice’ charity that’s been inviting known Chinese intelligence officials to its social events

💥An @imperialcollege professor using AI to hone combat drone behaviour and missile design with the Chinese army

UK-China Transparency launches today, covered by the Guardian and the Times

*The UK government is channelling Chinese Communist Party members who've been chosen on their ability to 'enforce CCP discipline abroad' into British universities*

ukctransparency.org/projects-2/are…

1/14 Image The Guardian:

“UK-China Transparency found that Chinese people applying to teach at the institutes were vetted by the Chinese government for their political characteristics, ethnicity, & ability to comply with CCP guidelines.”

This is serious

Myself and @billykenber 's story in The Times

"A Chinese businessman linked to a “secret police station” in London has organised Tory fundraising dinners and been photographed with party leaders, The Times can reveal."

thetimes.co.uk/article/chines… "Ruiyou Lin, 40, runs a takeaway ordering platform in Croydon from an office address which hosts an alleged overseas Chinese police station."

As I tweeted in October and have spoken publicly about since (to an audience including academics, UK officials, and activists) two of the three men publicly associated with the 'Chinese police stations' in the UK TOGETHER had lunch with Boris Johnson in 2021.

Much scrutiny lately of 'Chinese police stations' operating on the streets of Britain…

What links the 'stations' to British politics, the Chinese Communist Party, an assault in the heart of London, & serious organised crime?

This is big.

1/54 Disclaimer: 4 British newspapers are aiming to publish slithers of this story. I’ve worked with two of them.

I explain why I’m publishing this on Twitter at the bottom of this thread. This may put my safety in jeopardy.

Buckle up & prepare to be launched on a hypersonic journey thru the weird world of 🇬🇧's Confucius Institutes (CIs). Funded by the 🇨🇳 government & based inside 30 British universities, this is a crash course in why not to let authoritarian regimes into centres of learning.

1/36 Full report: henryjacksonsociety.org/publications/a…

The money: we identified c. £33.5 million and reckon there’s up to £10 million still undeclared. The majority comes direct from the Chinese government. The CIs are jointly run by the British host university and a Chinese partner.

🚩UK-CHINA NEWS 🚩 Out this week: a new report on the influence of the Chinese Communist Party in the world's media. I am co-author of a 10,000-word section on 🇬🇧. This thread summarises our findings. It turns out that *money talks*. Buckle up to find out what it says. 1/31 First of all, here is the link to the full report published by Freedom House, a think tank funded mostly by the US government. Of 30 countries studied, the UK received the joint 2nd highest score for the range of CCP influence efforts observed.

🚩CONFUCIUS INSTITUTES🚩 Telegraph reports our discovery of evidence suggesting that there is ethnic and political discrimination in the recruitment process for the Institutes, which takes place partly in China. telegraph.co.uk/news/2022/08/1…
[1/10] Background: Confucius Institutes (CIs) are run and funded by the Chinese government and Chinese universities, but based in universities in other countries. There are 30 Confucius Institutes in British universities, from LSE to Edinburgh.

What is the story here? Urgent clarity needed. "Taiwan on Friday blamed "political considerations" for the cancellation of WorldPride 2025 Taiwan after it said the organisers had insisted the word "Taiwan" be removed."

There's been a lot of noise about risks stemming from UK-China science cooperation. The thesis is more or less predicated on the conviction that China is a threat to peace. It claims the UK is helping improve China’s capacity for war. Some recent developments. THREAD 1/50 (!) Image This thread will look at the thesis & developments largely through the lens of ‘Exploring Research Engagement with China’, a 100+ page report published some weeks ago by the RAND Corporation, & commissioned by the UK’s Foreign Office. What is RAND? 2/50 rand.org/pubs/research_…

🇨🇳🇬🇧THREAD: A post by China’s former ambassador (2010-21) to the UK garnered some attention recently. Liu Xiaoming 刘晓明 is now China's Special Representative on Korean Peninsula Affairs. So who are Liu's UK friends & why is he meeting them? 1/53 Observers of Sino-British relations might recognise some of these chaps from the excellent newsletters produced by @BeijingToBrit. My special thanks to arch-observer @McWLuke for helping me ID several. Three Lords, two knights of the realm, and a professor! 2/53

@AaronBastani @ads82 Letting the ethnicity-cleansing authoritarians off the hook again. 2 of many things in the public record you might have mentioned had you prepared for this theme: Sinopharm told to develop vaccine on 5th Jan; WHO's Dr Michael Ryan (WHO) railed against CCP withholding info in Jan @AaronBastani @ads82 Image
