The shooting of #RalphYarl, the young black kid who was shot twice by an old man simply for ringing a doorbell, reminds me of a painful realization I learned growing up.
I grew up in a very diverse environment. Lots of white friends as well as friends of every other hue. Listened to all kinds of music, including rock. My parents raised me to be impeccably polite. Eloquent. Never got into any trouble. Great manners.
But it didn't matter.
To a subset of society, it doesn't matter what other attributes you have. When you are a young black man, to them, you are considered to be a threat. No matter WHAT you do. No matter what you don't do.
To some, I could see the look of fear in their eyes when they saw me.
It's a pretty stressful way to live, either being the person constantly suspected of being a danger just for existing or being the parent of one.
Go to the store, don't linger. Don't have your hands in your pocket because they think you're going to steal something.
Don't frown - somebody will think you're about to go off or something.
Don't hang out in groups. Where two or more of us are gathered together, somebody's going to be tempted to call 911.
And now, one more thing to fear, both for kids like Ralph Yarl as well as for their parents, who have yet one more thing keeping them up at night. Don't accidentally ring the wrong doorbell.
The point is that, to some, it doesn't even get to the point where your personal character, your demeanor and your behavior are factors in determining whether or not you're a threat.
It's just as simple as being black, male and young. And then you're an existential danger.
And here's the thing: the things that make a human a young black male are their date of birth, their ancestry and their gender.
Which are three things that none of us even control.
These are the things that, to some, see everyone who holds these attributes as an instant danger.

Get yourself a job where you can cost your employers as much money and reputational damage as Sean Hannity, Maria Bartiromo, Laura Ingraham and Tucker Carlson cost theirs - and your ID badge still works in the morning.
Keep that job and never let it go.
Yeah, Fox News should have suffered more serious consequences. But what they suffered is still pretty serious.
When companies lose nearly a BILLION dollars, they generally have to make up for it somewhere else.
Fox News’ management not only lied to its viewers but also screwed its shareholders.
A $787.5 million dollar payout means that Fox effectively wiped out:
- All of its $313.0 million dollar income for the quarter ending last December.
And
- $474.5 of the $605.0 million dollar income for the quarter ending last September.
- Fox has an annual net income of $1.2 billion. Their lies just cost them 66% of a whole year’s profit. Two thirds of a year’s worth of increase in shareholder equity.
In addition to that:
- Rupert Murdoch is freaking 92 years old. He can’t have that many years left of running the company. And it doesn’t seem obvious that his son Lachlan is up to the job.
Things that encourage me even in the midst of evil and tragedy …
Black lawmakers in Tennessee getting punished for protesting the murders of little white kids at school.
White kids in Missouri marching in protest of their black classmate being shot for ringing a doorbell.
A very mixed rural community in Alabama grieving together after yet another senseless mass shooting, with black and white neighbors hugging and consoling each other.
Racist politicians who want to pander more to white supremacists but who have to disguise it because they know that unfiltered appeals to racism will turn off lots of white voters.
If New York County, NY (Manhattan) were a state, it would be the 39th largest state in population, home to more people than ELEVEN U.S. states (Hawaii, New Hampshire, Maine, Montana, Rhode Island, Delaware, South Dakota, North Dakota, Alaska, Vermont and Wyoming).
NOTE: I’m not talking about New York City. I’m talking about just the borough of Manhattan, otherwise known as New York County, New York.
The place where Alvin Bragg is the District Attorney.
What’s more, Manhattan is home to nearly the same number of people as the 38th most populous state, West Virginia.
One of the more significant shifts in American politics over the last decade has been that Democrats have gained ground in the more populated areas (not just the cities but the suburbs surrounding them) and Republicans have gained ground in the less populated rural areas.
And these charts also show the fallacy of the idea that you can divide America into red states and blue states. Even red states have significant blue areas and many blue states have significant red areas.
Also, note a few things:
In Arizona, the two counties that make up 76.09% of the state's Voting Age Population had been shifting bluer in every Presidential Election since 2012.
Joe Biden is a proud Irish American. He celebrates his ancestry.
He’s talked about building things in America as much as Trump ever did - and, unlike Trump, has actually started making it happen.
Biden has made it a policy goal to create more high earning jobs here in America that do not require a college degree.
And yet, for some reason, in poll after poll after poll, no group of Americans dislikes Joe Biden more than white men who don’t have a college degree.
Why?
It’s not just that this demographic group doesn’t approve of Joe Biden. It’s that, in most polls I’ve seen, the majority of this group strongly disapprove of him.
The same is not true for white guys with college degrees for whatever reason.
