ATTN PITTSBURGH: Let’s talk about the concept known as β€œπ•π•šπ•€π•šπ• π•Ÿ ℀𝕖𝕣𝕠” + the push to end traffic fatalities and serious injuries on our streets. Photo of a skyline of Pitts...
When we say we want @Pittsburgh @gainey_ed to commit to ending traffic fatalities and serious injuries by 2035 this is what we mean. ZERO traffic fatalities and serious injuries is the ONLY acceptable number.
This policy not only addresses the most dangerous locations, but also proactively makes streets safer. Backed by the Federal DOT, committing to #VisionZero can help PGH receive additional funding if we publicly commit towards the goal of zero traffic deaths by a target date.
Approximately 20-25 Pittsburghers die every year traveling our streets. About a third of these deaths are pedestrians. Between 2010 and 2020, we lost 200 Pittsburghers to traffic violence, 55 of whom were walking, with another six people who were riding a bicycle. Image
Committing to zero traffic fatalities and severe injuries is a way to proactively address this problem. When a City focuses the strategy, funding, and personnel toward this goal, they are putting the pieces in place to reduce the harmful effects of car dependency.
With a Complete Streets Policy, Bike(+) Plan, Pedestrian Safety Action Plan, and traffic calming program, Pittsburgh has a solid foundation to build upon toward zero traffic fatalities and serious injuries. bikepgh.org/our-work/advoc…
Many US cities (PHL, Jersey City, DC, NYC) have publicly committed to ending traffic fatalities / serious injuries. Like other cities our size, PGH can achieve this. @gainey_ed ’s Infrastructure & Environment Transition Team identified the goal of 2035 - bikepgh.org/2022/05/13/may…
In a city where nearly 25% of households don't own a motor vehicle, we need to slow cars + carve out space for biking, walking, wheelchairs, & transit. We need leadership/resources to address drivers who speed through residential neighborhoods, park on sidewalks, in bike lanes.. Image
This loss of life is preventable and reaching the goal of zero is achievable. We imagine a day where no Pittsburgher will have to deal with losing a loved one to traffic violence on our streets.
