3️⃣ Pick a memorable domain

Having a keyword-rich or exact-match domain doesn't guarantee that you'll rank for those target keyword(s).

So if you haven't chosen a domain name yet, opt for something memorable + brandable instead.
4️⃣ Pick an appropriate TLD

TLDs like .biz and .info are associated with spam and could affect your ability to build high-quality links.

To attract global traffic, pick a generic TLD (gTLD) such as .com.

To attract local traffic, try a country code top-level domain like .co.uk.
5️⃣ Use subfolders to provide hierarchy

Your subfolder should offer useful information, such as:

example.com/store/earbuds/…

Here's an example of a poorly named subfolder:

example.com/airpods.html

You can't tell if this page is selling AirPods, an AirPod review, or something else.
6️⃣ Use as many subfolders as you need

Google says having multiple subfolders in a URL won't hurt rankings.

7️⃣ Avoid keyword repetition

You don't want your URLs to look spammy.

This is an easy mistake to make when working with subfolders, e.g. example.com.au/c/men/mens-sho…

While not a huge deal, something like this would be better: example.com.au/c/men/shoes/sn…
8️⃣ Avoid dates

Most popular CMS use URLs with dates by default—at least for posts.

This can cause issues if you decide to update your content.

If you're setting up a new site in WordPress, simply change your permalink settings before publishing anything: Image
9️⃣ Use URL parameters sparingly

These usually appear after a question mark (?) in the URL, and are common on ecommerce sites.

But they can create duplicate content issues—so be sure to canonicalize similar or duplicate URLs to the version that should rank in search engines.
Bonus tip: To find duplicate content issues on your site, crawl your website with Ahrefs' Site Audit and go to the Duplicate content report. Image
We've covered SEO best practices, but don't forget about your URL slug (i.e. the last part of your URL that identifies your page). 🐌

Follow these quick tips to get them in shape: Image
With some practice, the process shouldn't take more than seconds or minutes in future. ✨

Does a keyword have value to your business? 💡

If you've already done your keyword research, you have two ways of determining this:

1. The Business Potential score (Ahrefs' very own model)

2. Buyer's journey keyword mapping

👇
1. The Business Potential score

We developed this model to measure the value of a keyword in our content—and how easy it would be to pitch our product within that content.

Each keyword is assigned a score of between 0 and 3, like so:
2. Buyer's journey keyword mapping

This is the more common option.

Based on this logic, people who are earlier on in their journey are less likely to buy your product/service—so the keyword would have less value to your business.

Here's what it looks like, and how we'd map it:

4 ways to demonstrate the new "E" (experience) in E-E-A-T 🍔

For context, "experience" means Google will reward pages where the author has firsthand experience on the topic they're writing about.

Here's how to fit this into your content 👇
1️⃣ Show evidence of personal experience with the subject matter

According to Google, the best reviews are created by subject matter experts.

Reviewing a product? Use visuals (photos/videos) to support your expertise. This can also reinforce the authenticity of your review.
For instance, Thomas Sanladerer (@toms3dp) is well-regarded for his authentic 3D printing reviews and guides.

These are often accompanied by images of him testing out or tinkering with printers:

7 steps to get started in affiliate marketing 💰

1️⃣ Choose your niche
2️⃣ Choose a content platform
3️⃣ Find + join affiliate programs
4️⃣ Create great content!
5️⃣ Drive traffic to your site
6️⃣ Get clicks on your affiliate links
7️⃣ Convert clicks to sales 🤑

Let's delve deeper:
1️⃣ Choose your niche

Choose something you're passionate about—you'll need to create plenty of content to succeed with affiliate marketing!

Ask yourself:

- What am I good at?
- What do I like doing?
- What am I curious about?
- What do people tell me I'm good at?
For instance, Ahrefs' @siquanong built his first site around the topic of breakdancing—one of his hobbies.

Despite knowing nothing about marketing back then, he grew it to ~2k monthly visits.

How we repurpose our content across multiple channels 💡

At Ahrefs, we constantly repurpose content to help it go further.

Here's one example of how we did it:

We published a video on AhrefsTV about ChatGPT for SEO, which got us ~170k views:
We then turned this into a Twitter thread...

...and a blog post. We also embedded the original YouTube video in it.

This blog post now holds the top position in the SERPs for the search term "chatgpt seo".
