Do we live in a society of science illiterates and noticed only as everyone had to put the cards on the table early 2020? More precisely, we see that @GhoshAmitav's Unthinkable applies to SARS-CoV as well as to climate.
CoV-2 was widely circulating in Italy by September 2019 (!)
@GhoshAmitav 2. There is scientific debate what these findings mean if anything. Debate and implications are not reflected in public, politics, or even the wider scientific community. It's not our role to force such debate via twitter; our focus should be on solutions. academic.oup.com/cid/advance-ar…
3. For 1 Sep to 31 Dec 2019, Chang et al. 2023 found no SARS-CoV-2-specific antibodies in blood donors in Wuhan before Dec 2020, indicating no evidence of transmission of COVID-19 before December 2019 in Wuhan, China. Absence of e is no e of a, but still: academic.oup.com/proteincell/ar…
4. Why did other countries conduct no similarly rigorous serosurveys of 2019 blood donations in their own populations? The current stage of denial is not helping science recover lost trust.
It's past time for parliamentary investigations. Virologists, this malpractice is on you.
5. People in the comments go on about WIV - by all means, have fun. Please appreciate that we live in the funniest timeline.
6. You won’t get effective policy before you integrate the Ebola PHEIC 2019, HIV - Hi public-interest patent lawyers? -, and #Mpox 2022 into your SARS-CoV analysis. Why? Because they interact in counterintuitive ways.
Without interaction, SARS would be no global systems problem.
Some personal news. I may become father. My partner just tested positive for SARS-CoV-2, despite diligent N95 wearing. Explain to my face why your policy subjects embryos, pregnant women to airborne immune harm. Explain what society you are building. - Anyone? ht @Karl_Lauterbach
@Karl_Lauterbach When you say, "We have good immunity in the population from vaccination and/or infection," what you mean is not immunity. There is no cellular-level immunity to ANY human coronavirus (HCoV), least of all to SARS-CoV-2. 'Immunity' here means seroconversion. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seroconve…
@Karl_Lauterbach The presence of antibodies is no correlate of immunity or protection.
I share Wikipedia pages, available in many languages, as only a fraction of the population are educated to grasp the policy details. Those of us who do have a responsibility to society. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Correlate…
WHO classifies XBB.1.16 as VOI. Please support Dr. Van Kerkhove and WHO’s good work: as public health experts, they depend on state funding, just like national PHOs depend on national level political leaders who listen to science. A policy challenge, I say as political scientist.
Twitter is a good case of genetic recombination in fact: you can say the same thing over and over by rearranging letters on the same theme, and every time you like something, a number of new hosts are infected with recombinant knowledge.
Dr. Drosten once again falsely speculates about the end of a pandemic he doesn’t understand. This is public health malpractice. There is no herd or hybrid immunity to human coronaviruses (HCoV), least of all to SARS-CoV.
I’d appreciate if journalists quoted qualified scientists.
Admire the scientific beauty of the problem: I don’t see Dr. Drosten as muzzled or politically influenced. It’s deeper and subtler. - In my view it’s a systems problem: Virologists’ tools are blind to SARS-CoV dynamics. They genuinely believe their systematically biased analyses!
