The glitter shoes are on.

That can me only one thing, I'm going to #minnebar! Dark denim jeans and black ...
You can tell it is early for me because I missed the rest of the word "mean".

It is going to be a large coffee day.
My outfit for the day. Jenn wearing a teal mask, b...
Already one compliment on my haircut.
If you want to play along, here are today's sessions. #minnebar

Again, I am always impressed with food options here.

I can always safely eat.

For breakfast I had grapes, hard boiled egg, and a granola bar.

There was also bagels, donuts, apples, etc.
Minnesota: land of celiacs, vegans, and carnivores.
Okay I'm getting tired of all the "hands up if you ever..."

I didn't sign up for a shoulder workout.
Session 0

I'm going to remind everyone, your survival is more important than CO2 emitted in the product.

#minnebar
This is your semi regular reminder that plastic straws are an accessibility aid.

#minnebar
Yes, reducing CO2 emissions in HVAC solutions for corporate buildings is a HUGE thing and yes, focus there.
Masks aren't required (boo) but I am seeing a whole bunch of masked people.

So yay for that!
Anywho onto session 1!
Hmmm

Next year should I do a mic class?

Aka how to use microphones and how to wear different styles and how to mic around clothing choices.

Cause everyone deserves to be heard.
I bring this up because you should hold a hand microphone like you are eating an ice cream cone.
This is intriguing but also I'm like yeah privilege.

Cause white dudes in tech.
But he did have a good point that personal things does impact your experience and opinion on work.
People are now giving examples of the big changes they are working through now.
Reminder Myers-Briggs should just be considered like those "Which sandwich are you?" quizzes and not and end all be all.

And it is racist as hell.
medium.com/@simonspichak/…
Yes, you often have a 3rd choice/option. You can't always see it.

Also barriers to making change can be huge.
Yes!

The time to network isn't when you are in crisis.

Ideally you need to start before then if possible.
But life doesn't always work that way.

So do what you can.
You are in charge of your own career.
Some people fear change.
What is your worst case scenario?

What if it actually happened?

Now what is the realistic worst case scenario because the sun blowing up while zombies attack isn't highly likely.
Reminder:
Adulting is that bad, and you will be okay.

#minnebar
Next reminder:

BIPOC and white women are often over mentored and under sponsored.

All the mentoring in the world doesn't help if you don't get the opportunity to do things.
There is free daycare here.

I was just passed in the hallway by a line of little kiddos and it was so cute.
Lines to the bathroom... Yes.

But it is to mens room.
Saw a #minnebar friend in the hallway track.

Chatted with local tech slack person as well.

Yay for networking.
Now to session 2

It is all about horrible project setups
This slide is amazing. Slide of scared and overwhe...
This presentation is a masterclass in humor and that you can have a bazillion slides in a presentation.
They said the secret word today!

Kubernetes
The slide is about secrets and environments.

So the Pee-wee Herman gif was even more appropriate and on topic than usual.
Good reminder to never run your docker containers as root.

Unless you like database leaks and being hacked.
How many techies does it take to dim the lights in a smart conference room?

One

But she works at a lot of weddings.
I'm impressed at how well this live demo is going.

Which means I've just cursed it....

Oh well.
They are demoing debugging docker live in various IDEs.
And yes I cursed it, the resolution has gone to crap.
But they fixed it!

Yay!
Hmmmmm

Yes, VS Code is amazing but are we consolidating on one IDE? Which I could see being problematic like how few browsers engines there are now.
Oh god a horror story involving cold fusion.
Excellent point, if you run in containers on production, you should use containers for development as well.
Remember containers are just the "it works on my machine" "okay we will just ship your machine" solution.
Secrets management, the new perpetual problem.
This makes me so happy. Phone with a TTY machine ne...
Welp missing session 3

I found Munir and had to chat.

I chatted with several other people as well.

Yay for finding my #minnebar friends!
I should have submitted my crafternoon session.

Oh well, there is always next year.
Also remember breaks are important and valid.

Take time to recharge.
Had lunch and found my usual breakfast buddy and ate lunch.

Also found more people to chat with.
Session 4

Arguing about where you work.
Lots of arguing.
Session 5

I skipped to chat with a Devopsdays fellow organizer.

Hallway track for life!
Session 6

Back to the theater for "Can we not? Speedruning old mistakes with new tech"
Aka "What if we just... didn't?"
We don't have to feed tech more of the world.
The internet: what if you could talk to other computers?
Other computers is also other people.
Oh holy hell no.

Please don't use cinemagraphs for backgrounds of slides.

My eyes are hating me now.
Yes, my left eye hates me now.

The talk is excellent but now I'm distracted by eye strain.
Okay content mills wasn't web 1.0

That was web 2.0
Are you going to make things better for everyone that touches your content or worse?
Now a brief history of AI

Starting with mechanical turk.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mechanica…
Aka AI is really people.

People have to still process, tag, and train.
Statistical prediction !== Intelligence
Hallucinating facts

Aka language models can and do "make" things up.
Low quality output

Do you want to spend the time correcting or creating?
Language models are trained on existing large collections of text.

Who decides which collections?
Paradox of automation

At some point the helper can hinder, especially if you need to do something not standard.
Siri keeps interrupting into the presentation "trying" to help.

Which is funny as this is a presentation on do we need more AI
Ooh more on paradox of automation

Once you begin to rely on something, you can lose the ability to do it yourself.
Also this is why I have hated some "magic" in certain languages.
Computers cannot be held accountable.

So why do we let them make management decisions?
Who is accountable?

The creator of the model? The people who selected the training data? The person who wrote the prompt?
AI does cause FOMO and job insecurity.

But remember tech is constantly innovating away the annoying repetitive tasks.

Bash scripts, compilers, frameworks, containers....
Remember asking AI to generate art in the style of a living artist is stealing.

Find the artist, commission the thing, PAY for it, enjoy it.
Don't hide what you are doing.

Back in the day secretaries would put their initials on documents they wrote that bosses dictated.

AI should be mentioned if you use it in your text.
Why yes, I did take a typing class that taught me how to do memos...

Have I ever typed a memo? No, but the format is burned into my brain.

Did the insurance company call me back today?

Of course not.
So I now have sent an email to my former employer trying to get this whole thing untangled so I don't have to pay cash for a doctor appointment I thought was covered.

Because once again, the health insurance system in the U.S. sucks.
Because why not mess up my credit score while I deal with something that was suppose to be covered?

Jenn's bare bones accessibility cheatsheet.

Because the web needs to be more accessible than it was in 1994.
1. Can you tab to every link, form field, interaction point?

Just hit tab and make sure everything is in a logical order.

Drop down menus can be opened via enter or spacebar.

Or if your nav menus suck for keyboard you have a site map easily accessible by EVERYONE.
2. Run a color contrast checker and fix issues.

There are tons online. I like to recommend WAVE. But do browsers have built in checkers for individual elements so you do you.

This is your reminder that company logos on a Sponsors page or section for a conference NEED ALT TEXT.

Also cheating by making the alts blank mean that no one that uses assistive technology knows who is sponsoring. Is that what your sponsors want?
Also please double check color contrast.

And remember links should have two ways to show they are links. Underline, change colors, bold, whatever do something in addition to having the cursor change.
Why yes, this rant brought to you by the KubeCon website.

Currently all of the Platinum sponsors are skipped by VoiceOver. And listening to the FULL DAMN URL with query parameters for some of the sponsors SUCKS BALLS.

This tweet in this thread hits hard.

My extended family only had use for me when I was useful.
Like on my father's side, whenever I was there I was used for labor.

To this day I hate drywall.
My mom's side, I would be assigned tasks at funerals.

Like at my uncle's funeral I was assigned my grandfather. I was also loaded up with kleenex and cough drops. I was the walking connivence store for funeral and burial needs.

I want to go in depth more on this one.

I have had juniors angry with me after asking for help when I had the answer. They felt they should have known if I knew it right away.

In those times, I explain why they should NOT have known because some things only come with experience
I also tell stories of times when I struggled and asked for help and was defeated when the person helping knew the answer right away.

Only to be told that BECAUSE I struggled and got all the right things set up they were able to solve the issue right away.
That was one of my support cases when I was a SharePoint support at Microsoft. I had a case that had been open for a while and finally I found something similar in a previous case. I collected the same logs and my supervisors took the case from me.

I was angry.
