The party is officially on, with Iceland, Macedonia, Chile, Italy, Cambodia, England, Switzerland, Uzbekistan, Canada and sooo many other countries being represented in our webinar chat box. Where are you joining us from today? Give us a shout and let us know! #EYPlayParty 🛩️
Developing strong attachments in early years has a positive impact on relationships later in life. Prioritising relationships is part of a loving pedagogy. Understanding behaviour as communication helps us create secure attachments with children. #LovingPedagogy#AttachmentTheory
Secure attachments with children are key for positive behaviour. Spend time together, observe, listen, stay calm, have routine, realistic expectations, use objects of comfort, & create a sense of belonging 🫂💕 #LovingPedagogy#EarlyYears#EYPlayParty@tamsingrimmer
Awareness of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) is key in early years. Trauma can affect physical and mental health long-term, and we need to provide a trauma-aware environment that is safe and nurturing to support children's wellbeing. #ChildhoodTrauma@tamsingrimmer
Nurturing, loving relationships are the perfect antidote to adverse childhood experiences. How do we facilitate that? Build secure attachments, prioritise staff and children's wellbeing, work closely with families, & reframe "attention-seeking" behaviour as "attachment-seeking".
Astutely, @tamsingrimmer points out we do not know what might be tipping point for a child, & that our job is to fill each child's emotional cup everyday with love and quality time so the child has enough reserves to cope with whatever comes their way. #LovingPedagogy#ToddlePlay
Loving children is important for effective learning, but love is rarely talked about in #ECE settings: @tamsingrimmer A warm and loving environment can foster a sense of security & belonging which will positively impact children's overall development & wellbeing. #ToddlePlay
Going all the way back to the ancient Greeks for this one, @tamsingrimmer asks, what are the different types of love, and how could they relate to children in our care? #EYlove#LovingPedagogy#ToddlePlay 💕💞
Teachers operate on the norms of professional love, prioritising the child's interests, guiding & protecting them, praising success & supporting failures. The goal is to encourage independence while providing a caring & protective environment. #ProfessionalLove#LovingPedagogy
So why develop a #LovingPedagogy in EY? It empowers children and offers them a loving environment to thrive in, positively impacting their lives and keeping them at the heart of everything we do - @tamsingrimmer#ChildCentredLearning
By being sensitive to children's needs, holding them in mind, & acting in loving ways, we can create a happier workplace and reassure parents that their children are well looked after and happy. We can help children develop lifelong socioemotional skills. #EarlyChildhoodEducation
Let's take a moment to show our little ones how much we care: we can offer encouragement & praise, listen & value their thoughts, surprise them with small gifts, help them when they need it, & show affection through a warm embrace or high five. 🎁🖐️#LoveInAction#LovingPedagogy
It's crucial to understand the child's love language & reciprocate e.g., if a child keeps bringing you little pebbles & feathers, their love lang might be gifts. Or it may be something you may not be keen on, but you do anyway (new battery to a musical toy, rerereading a book)
To truly connect with children, get down to their level and see the world from their perspective. Listen to their words, ask genuine questions, & notice their behaviour & actions. Act as a co-player and plan sessions with their interests in mind. #LovingPedagogy@tamsingrimmer
@tamsingrimmer By involving children in conversations & never talking over their head, we can show them that we value their thoughts and opinions. This approach fosters a sense of trust and respect, which is essential for their emotional and social development. #ToddlePlay#LovingPedagogy 💞

Our penultimate session of the #EYPlayParty is a chat on Outdoor Play with @MuddyTeachers, Anne-Marie Evans, Christina Pickles, hosted by @MsNursery.
Chat has absolutely taken off, with people saying hello from China, Egypt, Thailand, USA, Pakistan, Italy, Uzbekistan...and more.
First of all, Christina stresses on the importance of the adults getting in touch with how they feel about the outdoors themselves? Insects? Heat? Dirt? She flags that teaching outside requires HUGE flexibility, since you may not even have a window to throw your plan out of!
An urgent reminder: what did outdoor play look like for us? We fell down, stayed out till dinner time, climbed up trees, got dirty, etc...children today don't have that opportunity, and it's our job to bring it back for them, says @MuddyTeachers.
We have started our watch party for Sound Art: Connecting contemporary art and children's play, by @louisa_penfold, Diamond Arrington, and Kaijeh Johnson.
Contemporary art and children's play may not be the most obvious combination, but the sensory stimulation, fuel for curiosity, and channel for self-expression make contemporary art a great medium to enhance children's experience of #LearningThroughPlay.
With these two contrasting images, @louisa_penfold highlights the range that children's art covers, with one being a structured adult-intended creation, while the other is messy and exploratory. New materialism suggests that materials and people mutually transform one another.
We're getting ready to head into our session on literacy and loose parts with Dr Carla Gull. Moderated by @twisha27 and supported by @shamal_merchant and @KKatPlay. Grab a quick snack and drink and come back to continue our #EYPlayParty🎈
What exactly do we mean by literacy? Although reading & writing immediately come to mind, according to @AlbertaEd, in EY it is the ability, confidence, & willingness to engage with language to acquire, construct, & communicate meaning in all aspects of daily living. #ToddlePlay
And what about loose parts? Simply put, it refers to objects that can be put together in many different without specific direction. #EYLooseParty#LoosePartsPlay
Up next, we’re diving into the wonderful world of treasure baskets with @MctavishAnni. Through this workshop, she will introduce us to not just what a treasure basket is, but also how to make our own, and how we can engage in high-quality #EYPlay. #ToddlePlay#LearningThroughPlay
Babies are born with about 100bn neurons!! Sensory, emotional, & physical activity triggers neural connections 🧠 making thinking & learning happen. Children's whole bodies respond to sensory stimulations, shaping their experiences & pathways #BrainDevelopment#EYPlay#EarlyYears
Treasure baskets, pioneered by Elinor Goldschmied in post-war Europe, do not need any complicated/expensive equipment. You can put a treasure basket together with things you've found around the house, typically something easy to hold & manipulate & made of natural materials.
That's a wrap on Day 1 of the ultimate #EYPlayParty! A huge thank you to everyone who took part! If you haven't yet jumped onto this party bus 🪩🚍 you can sign up here bit.ly/3UHU3ZF This will also get you access to recordings, exclusive toolkits, & action labs ‼️🧵👇👀
We have @sharrismackay and @matt_karlsen of @Playfulinquiry kicking off our session on Playing with Word and World, with people streaming in from Canada, Colombia, the Netherlands, Trinidad, Oman....phew! Let's keep this #EYPlayParty going!
Kicking off with an introduction to the story workshop and a beautiful video, it was found that materials provided a fantastic medium of expression for children. Who found it, you ask? The children themselves! Take a look at their feedback! @Playfulinquiry#EYPlayParty
Susan created an incredible collage in real time for us, to share a story that reminded her of her childhood. It's lovely to see people sharing memories of their childhood (we're seeing lots of first bicycle rides🚲) @matt_karlsen
encourages us to lean into our own experiences.
