In January 2000, Darrell Night was abandoned outside Saskatoon by two police officers. He is remembered for speaking out against this practice of "Starlight Tours."

Night passed away earlier this month at age 56. ImageImage
Two officers were convicted in Night's case. Investigations into the deaths of Naistus and Wegner were inconclusive.

Night was essentially kidnapped, taken away and left to die on an extremely cold winter night on the outskirts of Saskatoon.

I wrote about the attempted murder of Darrell Night previously in this thread on police brutality in Canada almost exactly two years ago.

👇🧵
Someone shared a personal account of marching on the #Saskatoon police station with Darrell Night after he had begun speaking out against the Starlight Tours by Saskatoon Police at the time.

The “order” part of “law and order” has always been about keeping the “lesser” classes in line.

Policing in Canada grew out of gangs that were hired to beat Indigenous people and break worker’s strikes.

What @sunrickbell outlines is promises of violence.
Here’s a thread that I wrote a while ago about the history of “order” in Calgary and Canada.

The other term for “order” is police brutality.

Making streets feel “safe” means getting police off them, @sunrickbell. 🧵👇

?
One specific example of police enforcing social order—that’s the term used in @sunrickbell’s article:

“The woman who was assaulted by a Calgary police officer who threw her to the ground like a rag doll in 2017 says she's still dealing with the trauma.”

Because the wealthy own the largest channels that most people use to inform themselves, the narratives that challenge their dominance will never reach as wide an audience as they deserve.

#KlondikePapers
Those with wealth will use their power to suppress criticism and dissent. When criticism and dissent slips past their mass media conglomerates, there is always the courts—which have been built to protect the wealthy.

Because the working class has been squeezed to the point that almost half of Canadians are just a few hundred dollars from insolvency, it is virtually impossible for the working class to stand up to their oppressors.

I’ve seen estimates suggesting that as many as 1 in 48 people in Alberta have a covid infection right now.
This is a pretty big deal when you consider that such a large % of people experience long-term symptoms after covid.

This is the kind of story that you’d expect more journalists to revisit. Major news organizations corporations just aren’t giving this huge story the attention it requires.

Anti-democratic forces like the #KochNetwork were used as a template for the same sort of corruption in Canada. Similar groups in Canada have incubated the careers of both #UCP premiers of Alberta.
Here’s a list of Canadian Atlas Partners in Canada. Pay attention to the names of these organizations. You’ll see them come up again and again. Image
CPC leader, “Poilievre, is receiving criticism for delivering a speech to the Frontier Centre for Public Policy, a [Conservative] think tank associated with efforts to downplay the effects of Canada's residential school system.”

Conservative twitter is a wild place with wild beliefs… ImageImageImageImage
Where do these “Conservative” ideas come from?

Some of these paranoid conspiracies originate from hate farms like Rebel Media, or the so called “True North Centre.”

@HeatherMoAndCo put together a thread on TNC some time ago. 👇

Corporate-owned conglomerate media rarely spends time countering Conservative disinformation. Basically all for-profit corporate media is owned by Conservatives, so they conjure a common enemy with the hard-right conspiracy media: “liberals!” 🧵👇

I still report anti-vaxx accounts for encouraging self-harm. Typically the people behind these accounts will let their veil slip. The “PureBlood” label they apply to themselves evokes white supremacist and fascist undertones.
“The phrase (pure-blood) was popularized by J.K. Rowling’s villain Lord Voldemort in the Harry Potter series as a way to distinguish between those with “pure” wizard ancestry and everyone else,”drawing parallels with the Nazi doctrine of the “master race.”
vice.com/en/article/7kv…
The term, “pureblood” “opens a direct line to the Christofascist movement represented by the QAnon community and similar far-right groups.“
