The conversation around banning ChatGPT in schools is like forcing students to use an abacus instead of a calculator and work by candlelight instead of benefiting from electricity. It seems to stem from a laziness to not want to update decades old methodologies... (thread)
As a professor, I know how challenging it is to stay current and innovative. I also know some colleagues who refused to update their approaches during the pandemic to make classes more remote friendly.
It boggles my mind that institutions that are supposed to be about learning, are so resistant to...learning??? #chatgpt4 is not without risks (obvi) but is changing the how we curate, research and establish knowledge.
Universities should be at the forefront of what I call "knowledge development strategies". We need to teach people the benefits and risks of using these tools, because guess what? They are here and there's no going back.
And as an author, I can tell you, ChatGPT is changing the way I research, think, draft, and write. I've had to teach myself how to adapt. It's not about the giving essays as assignments, it's about teaching people who to learn and think critically.
Like the ESSAY was not the point. It was what writing the essay was supposed to teach. Now it's up to us as educators to adapt, innovate and lead. Some of the responses from universities has been straight up cringe. Tell me you're outdated without telling me you're outdated.
To be clear, there are risks and dangers in how we use #chatgpt in learning, but it's our job to figure it out the same way we've figured out every other tool. It's like they'd rather keep talking about faster horses, when the cars have already arrived. Sink or swim...

I live surrounded by French farmers. I’m watching the impact of climate change first hand. Burnt crops, barren fields, drying rivers. Are people not paying attention? Water/food shortages are coming.
It makes me want to scream when I see people’s shocked reaction to the recent extreme storms in Paris. What part of this is surprising? Scientists have literally been warning us for decades. It’s going to be exactly like this: wildly unpredictable and more extreme
Someone in passing said they’d just adjust the AC. Meanwhile tarmacs and railways are melting and Europe is literally on fire. I am trying to stay focused on solutions journalism and not just eco-grief but sometimes I am just filled with fucking rage at these politicians
