My best memories as a late-millennial adolescent were hanging out with the older-millennials who were obsessed with Boomer culture, hitch-hiking, folk music, mass paperback beat poetry, etc.

"Playing video games" I associate with depression & "not being able to go outside" to do "Boomer stuff" like smoking pot around a campfire by the lake & playing Bob Dylan songs.

Amongst millennials there was still an aversion to "Geek Culture" & the total embrace of technology-- but this faded very swiftly as "playing video games" became the only way to hang out, & no longer a subset of people, but everyone became a "geek" or "gamer"

There were the millennials whose embrace of technology meant having an 80gb iPod so you could fit the entire corpus of 20th century "boomer music" on it -- & the embrace of "Instagram/Snapchat" so you could be on AOL Instant Messenger 24/7.

There were the Millennials who listened to Modest Mouse & there were the Millennials who listened to "Top 40" & "Video Game Music" -- the former meant hanging out at a house show for an indie rock band, the latter meant "partying" or "gaming"

My best memories are with the former set of people-- the types of people who were obsessed with "Culture" in the sense of "going to book stores" or "going to see a screening of a Kubrick movie in the college town" etc. I had fun partying & gaming too, but the memories are hazy.

As cringe as people made it out to be-- the Kodak Camera Nostalgic Millennials who were "not online" wanted to go camping, yearning for moments of authenticity that would not ever be "online" -- these produced memories that I cherish still.

I cherish "Hipster Memories" more than proto-Zoomer memories of detachment, party drugs, & video games. I will always remember listening to Jordan Maason & the Horse Museum under a full moon by the stream drinking whiskey from an Arizona Iced Tea can after seeing Ramshackle Glory

You can cringe at "Folk Punk" music, it was the most Millennial-Boomer affectation of the time-- but my memories soundtracked by Defiance Ohio are better than my memories soundtracked by Drake.

I'm listening to the Pogues & reminiscing.
