Not you, of course. Your friend. Statistically 70% of the population has some form of herpes, but definitely not you.
This thread is for your friend 😉
The herpes virus (HSV-1) is a sneaky little bitch. It hides out in your trigeminal nerve, waiting to strike in your weakest moment. It never fully goes away, only ebbs and flows
When herpes decides to rear its ugly head, it puts on a show.
The prodromal stage comes first. Tingling tells you it’s about to go down.
Then it blisters up, full of eager virus ready to infect its next victim.
Then it bursts, starts to crust over and this is when it’s ugly
We have a “miracle” drug called valacyclovir, commonly known as Valtrex to save the day in your time of need.
But the problem is most people take it when it’s too late
Valtrex really only provides benefit when taken during the prodromal stage. Chances are, you want the magic cure when it’s crusty and ugly. You can take the meds but don’t expect much.
What can you take for an ugly cold sore instead of prescription meds?
Lysine
Vitamin C
Zinc
Propolis
Lemon balm
Lysine is usually my first line of defense for patients struggling with a cold sore. It competes with arginine and herpes needs arginine. Definitely stay away from foods high in arginine.
Vitamin C has antiviral properties and and reduce the severity and duration of an outbreak.
Zinc is overall great for immune function and shown to interfere with the virus replication process.
Propolis is found in raw honey, has antiviral properties and can accelerate healing.
Lemon balm is great as a topical ointment to smooth and speed up the healing.
Now your “friend” has what they need to keep the cold sores at bay.
One last note, if you have an outbreak don’t be shy around doctors. This thread was inspired by a patient I had today and it’s really not a big deal. Zero judgments, no reason for the stigma.

I’ve been spending some time trying to understand design from a higher level rather than learning specific software
Recently down a Dieter Rams rabbit hole, and early designs from Braun
I’m obviously drawn to the oral care products but the whole brand is very interesting to me
I’m not an expert by any means so take my observations with a grain of salt but this product was designed 40 years ago and is almost indistinguishable from waterpicks today. If anything, this is even an upgrade in some respects.
I find it fascinating when a brand can create a design that is aesthetic, unique, timeless, and somehow invisible all at the same time.
Zyn has taken the world by storm as a safe way to get your nicotine fix.
We may not have flying cars but we have modern tobacco-free nicotine. Zyn has become a meme and possibly responsible for a portion of the GDP due to reported increased productivity output.
Is it healther?
Before I dive into this let me clarify:
I am not naive to the benefits of nicotine. There are plenty of articles that demonstrate nicotine is not all bad, and has neuroprotective effects.
You may disagree with the following statement but chewing tobacco is one of the most predictable risk factors for oral cancer.
You can witness the changes of the oral soft tissue in real time between exams. Just because you have an uncle that never got cancer doesn't change it.
So you've been told you grind in your sleep but they weren't talking about your bank account?
Maybe your dentist even told you that you need a $900 night guard.
Let's go over fact vs fiction
The first trigger for a dentist to say "you grind in your sleep" is tooth wear.
They see worn down teeth and say "ah HA! You are wearing down your teeth because your gnashing those teeth while you sleep."
But how do they know for sure?
Well, they don't.
I'm not saying nighttime grinding doesn't exist. It does, but it is often a scapegoat for tooth wear which is much more likely to be happening during the DAYTIME.
Most tooth wear is actually a sign of a functional problem rather than a "grind in your sleep" problem.
Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) or Ubiquinone is known for it's cardiac benefits but it can aid in keeping your gums healthy.
CoQ10 is a fat soluble antioxidant produced naturally by our bodies and found in food.
It's an energy transfer molecule, found in high concentrations in tissues with high rates of metabolism.
Deficiency leads to decreased cell function/efficiency and increased oxidative stress.
CoQ10 levels decrease as we age, and many medications (i.e., statins) depelte the body of CoQ10. There are also primary genetic mutations that can lead to deficiency (rare).
Many people are deficient in CoQ10 due to poor diet.
The problem: there's way too many products out there that claim to "whiten"
Let's cut through the BS to get you a few shades brighter 👇
Teeth get stained, it's a fact of life.
However, people often mistake erosion for stain. Don't try to whiten teeth with erosion.
The yellow is from the inner layer of tooth (dentin) shining through because you've lost your enamel shell.
Stop using charcoal toothpaste.
It's liquid sandpaper and "whitens" by scraping away enamel (how you end up on the ride side of the pic above). We need to move away from the mindset of scrubbing/sterilizing teeth.
There is no need to obliterate your enamel for a whiter smile.
