The Circle of Competence is a simple & powerful mental model for staying focused and unlocking growth in your business.

A short thread on how it works: Image
Solopreneurs can use The Circle of Competence to focus on their small circle of strength & expertise.

And by staying within your circle, you'll make excellent decisions and avoid costly mistakes in your business.

Let's dive in:
Assess your skills:

Make a list of your skills, knowledge, and experiences.

All of the stuff you are really, really great at.

But, make sure you find the intersection of what you're good at AND what you enjoy.
Focus on your strengths:

Next, list all of the tasks you need to accomplish for your business.

Find the ones that fall within your circle of competence.

Prioritize these!

You'll work on stuff you love, deliver great results, & improve the chances of having happy customers.
Grow your circle:

Once tasks are prioritized, consider how you might expand over time.

Continuous learning & growth are vital, and having additional competencies improves your success rate.

Invest in yourself by taking courses or seeking specific mentorship in those areas.
Outsource & delegate:

After expanding, there will still be tasks outside of your circle.

For those, consider outsourcing or partnering with experts in those areas.

You can continue to focus on your strengths while still delegating essential business functions to others.
Make great decisions:

Over time, your understanding of your circle gets deeper.

Make sure to view every future decision through this lens.

Approach all challenges with a clear understanding of your strengths and limitations.

Doing so will help you make much better decisions.
Adapt & grow:

As your business grows, your circle will likely change.

Be cognizant of where you lose interest, or additional areas you're excited about.

If your passions and skills begin to shift, it's important to re-assess your skills.

Make a yearly check-in a must.
And that's it.

This simple web design technique increased my conversions by 300%.

It's called the Upside-Down Homepage.

Here's how it works: Image
1. Start with your primary CTA (call-to-action) in the hero:

Put your call-to-action at the top, not the bottom.

That way, when someone visits your homepage, they quickly see what you're offering and can immediately decide if they want it.

Just tell people what you offer.
2. Support the primary CTA with social proof like logos or testimonials:

Right after your CTA, share some good words from people who've tried your product or service.

Feature well-known clients with testimonials if you have them.

Don't have any?

Ask!

James Clear said:

"You do not rise to the level of your goals, you fall to the level of your systems."

But most people never build any.

My 6 critical solopreneur systems (and how I built them): Image
1/ Knowledge Management System

Everything you know or need to reference should be stored in one place.

I use @NotionHQ as my personal knowledge management system:

- Business plan
- Weekly to-do
- Course roadmap
- Business workflow
- Process documents

All in one place. Image
2/ Time Blocking System

GCal + Calendly makes sure I never book something in the wrong spot.

- Mornings: Workout & Engagement on Social
- Early afternoon: Creativity and writing
- Late afternoon: Meetings & projects

I set up custom availability for everything. Image

How to keep your business small (and win big).

The 2-Pizza Rule from Jeff Bezos: Image
The 2 Pizza Rule states:

Any collaborative team should be small enough to be fed by two pizzas.

It's meant for companies & meetings, but I think it's also a simple concept for solopreneurs to create effective collaborations (without hiring.)

Let's dive into the benefits:
Agile Decision-Making:

Small collabs allow you to make decisions quickly and effectively.

Lose the bureaucracy.

You'll get more time to focus on the tasks that truly matter, boosting productivity and growth.

Always keep your collabs small: 3-4 people max

Every piece of advice I could think of after 4 years as a Solopreneur.

1. Pessimists are often right, and optimists are often wealthy.
2. If you don't respect people's time, they won't respect you.
3. The best entrepreneurs know how to teach themselves.
4. You learn 100x more by trying than by reading ab someone else.
5. If you don't know how to sell, you're going to struggle.
6. Thick skin is a prerequisite for building in public.
7. You go 10x faster by supporting people, not tearing them down.
8. No matter how good your product is, someone will hate it.
9. Price whatever you offer at a rate you'd be comfortable paying.

Solopreneurship 101:

Work on yourself, take notes, share them with others.
Here's the easiest way to get started:

Pick something you're obsessed with and go down the rabbit hole.

- Watch YouTube videos
- Read blogs and articles
- Listen to every podcast

Take yourself from consciously incompetent to conscious competence.
During this transformation, take down as many notes as possible:

- What did I observe?
- What did misunderstand?
- How have I applied these learnings?
- What was true that I thought was false?
- What mistakes did I ultimately end up making?
