Ponniyin Selvan novel is famous for its characters, history and plot twists. Did you know that its geographical descriptions are accurate?

Come, let us travel along Vandhiyathevan to retrace the hero's journey in modern day Tamilnadu, with google map links! A thread (1/13) Image
Vandhiyathevan is on a mission - to deliver secret messages from Kanchipuram to Thanjavur.

After 175km travel, both the hero and his horse are tired. That is when he sees the refreshing visuals of Veeranarayanapura lake.

It was Aadi 18, and the Cholas were celebrating. Image
This dam of 16km length was built by Rajaditya Chola who named it after his father Parantaka aka Veeranarayanan.

Ramanuja was influenced by the magnitude of this lake and decided to establish 74 mutts : a number based on the 74 openings in the lake.

Hero & Aazhvarkadiyaan proceed south to Veeranarayana Perumal temple.

They see a young Nathamuni, singing the 10 known pasurams of the time (who later goes on to discover the lost 3990 pasurams)

This is Kalki's genius: making his reel characters meet real historic people! ImageImage
This Abimaana Sthala temple is in Kattumannarkoil, which is 26km from Chidambaram and 6km from Veeranam lake.

Chola inscriptions mention the temple's name as Veeranarayana Vinnagaram (Tamil for Vishnu's Griham-house)

Next, the hero reaches Kadambur Sambuvarayar palace to stay the night.

This is where the plot thickens: he accidentally discovers a secret meeting of conspirators discussing who should become the next king! But where is this Sambuvarayar palace today?

Does it still exist? Image
Palaces, however magnificent, if built with red stones do not stand the test of time.
They crumble eventually, unlike temples built with black stone.
Bloggers suggest that Amirthakateshwarar temple in Melakadambur, is the site of Kadambur palace. Map:

The next morning, influenced by Aazhvarkadiyaan, the hero reaches Kumbakonam to meet Kudanthai astrologer.

This is where he meets his love interest, Kundhavai for the first time.
This house is near Kotteeswaran temple, a Paadal Petra Sthalam.

Let us take a slight detour - and travel along with Aazhvaarkadiyaan.

He crosses Kollidam river to follow Pandya conspirator Idumbankaari, who meets his leader Ravidasan at Thirupurambiyam Pallipadai at midnight.

This secret place exists even today! ImageImage
This Pallipadai temple was built to honor king Prithvipathi, who d!ed in the Thirupurambiyam battle. This battle changed the course of history, resulting in the fall of Pallavas & the rise of Cholas. Today, it is is in ruins with no walls or visitors!

After multiple adventures in the Tanjore palace, hero finally reaches Pazhaiyaarai - the old capital of Cholas. To deliver the 2nd message to Kundavai.

Nathan Koil and Vadathalli Koil at Pazhaiyaarai are mentioned in the novel.
Map: goo.gl/maps/h2Jrwf8no… ImageImage
What about the multistoried palaces in Pazhayaarai where Kundhavai & Arulmozhi were born?

The Cholas, their majestic temples had lasted the test of time, but their magnificent palaces didn’t.

Nothing remains of them, except for their memories.

He delivers the 2nd scroll to Kundhavai to complete his mission.
Phew, the hero's journey from Part 1 comes to an end here.
He travels a grand total of 350km from Kanchipuram to Pazhaiyaarai with multiple detours, betrayals, friendships and loves!

Today is Shri Rama Navami.

This is based on lunar calendar - 9th day of Shukla Paksha in Chaitra month (Panguni)

Pushkar Bhatnagar, an IRS officer purchased the license for Planetarium Gold software in 1999 to scientifically date the Ramayana.

His results were shocking (1/9)
This method of employing software to date the Ramayana on the basis of astronomical references
mentioned in source text , was pioneering.

Valmiki's aim was not to plant evidences. His astronomical references are recorded incidentally, as ancillaries to the main subject: Sri Ram
Valmiki states the position of different planets with regards to zodiac constellations and nakshatras in Bala Kaanda 1/18/8-9 verses at the time of Ram's Birth.

This can be used to complete Ram's astrological chart.

When this data is plugged into the software, we get his DOB!

Did you know that the first temple Cholas built in Thondai Naadu is a Shiva temple in ... Velachery, Chennai?

Originally built by the Pallavas, this temple is also ideal for 60th, 70th & 80th birthday functions due to its rich mythology.

Short thread with google map link (1/7): Image
According to myth, Somugasura snatched the Vedas from Lord Brahma. Lord Vishnu recovered them from him, but the Vedas had lost their sanctity.

To regain it, the Vedas themselves worshipped Lord Shiva here, hence called as Vedasreni. This became current day Velachery. (2/7) Image
Another myth states that Lord Yama had lost his Dhanda (staff) at Thirukadayur, Mayiladuthurai which is considered ideal for Shastiyapthapoorthi functions.

Yama reached here, built a tank and did penance to regain his Dhanda.

Hence it is called Shri Dhandeeshwara temple! (3/7) Image

Hampi, the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire, has historical significance.

Did you know that it has mythological significance too?

It is the Kishkindha from Ramayana!

Here's a list of 10 spots you can visit in Hampi that had events from Ramayana, with google map links:
After Ravana kidnaps Sita, Ram & Lakshman start searching for her.

Kabandha, a Gandharva, advises Rama to form an alliance with Sugriva to win over Ravana.

Kabandha directs them to meet Shabari, who knows the wherabouts of Sugriva, currently incognito.

The journey begins!
Shabari had ran away from her wedding to save the lives of 100s of animals that were to be sacrificed for the feast.

She was instructed by Rishi Matanga to stay at Sureban (Karnataka), awaiting Ram.

Her life's task was fulfilled when she met her Lord & directed him to Pampa!

Today in Parliament, Rahul Gandhi & other MPs raised slogans of 'Adani Adani Adani' in front of PM.

As much as this is uncivil, a real democracy at least provides chances for voicing dissent.

In 1975 Emergency, the word "Maruti" was censored to protect Sanjay Gandhi.

(1/8) Image
Coming at a time when Rahul Gandhi, Sanjay’s nephew, has launched a visceral attack on the Narendra Modi government for supporting "crony capitalism", this thread is a good reminder of what went on behind the scenes in the heyday of socialism.
Sanjay, who apprenticed at Rolls Royce was fascinated with cars.

As a self-respecting nepotistic kid, he pulled his mom's strings to make the govt issue a letter of intent for his pet project "Maruti"

Haryana CM obligingly provided 290 acres of fertile land at throwaway prices! Image

SuKi Sivam's initials has a story. His father Suki Subramaniam crafted it.

He took Su from Subramaniam, his own name & merged it with Ki, for Krishnamurthy as a tribute to Kalki & made Su Ki as his family's initials.

His father wouldn't have approved SuKi Sivam of today (1/9) Image
SuKi Sivam, popular motivational speaker and writer had also forayed into giving spiritual discourses for many years now.

His discourses were always perceived as cursory, as it hit the intellect, but it failed to appeal to a devout heart.

He charged hefty fees for his talks.
While his delivery lacked devotion & execution reeked more of economics than education, the point is this: He had an agenda which he subtly pushed into his discourses.

He started blaming one community for all social evils, which is straight out of the Dravidian playbook.

Today is #ThiruvalluvarDay & there is a lot of confusion about his identity.

Was he an atheist? A Hindu? Chriśtian? Muślim? Jain? Buddhiśt?

Leaving politics aside, is there is any way to determine his identity by analyzing his work?

Yes & the answer is clear.

A fact-based 🧵
Some might ask: Should we even be doing this research?

Why try to box Thiruvalluvar into a religious identity? Isn't his work universal, and common for all?

Good question!
The answer to this consists of 2 points.
1. Marcus Aurelius, a Stoic philosopher's work is universal & is followed globally.

But this does not take away his religious beliefs.
Marcus worshipped & prayed to Roman god Jupiter.

Even a universal philosopher has an identity.
What's wrong in researching Thiruvalluvar's?
