As part of ongoing discussion around the changes to wallet.near.org and recent news stories concerning vulnerabilities on other wallet platforms this week, @NEARFoundation has created a thread discussing the state of security around NEAR’s web wallet.

To improve the usability on NEAR wallet, it sent user telemetry data to a 3rd party service for users who used SMS or email recovery.
On 6/6/2022 a bug was reported in the wallet. There was a potential vulnerability in the security of wallets that used email or SMS recovery as data travelled to the third party service. The bug was patched that same day and no accounts were compromised.

Since its inception, the @NEARProtocol has been designed to evolve towards a fully sharded blockchain. With the current number of over 300k transactions per day, the network still only uses 13% of its capacity.

However, to meet the growing demand as more and more projects start building on NEAR in the coming months, we deployed Simple Nightshade Sharding onto mainnet today. It can take several hours or days for the code to be integrated by all network participants.
