When he was 11, his father was executed for refusing to join a collective farm.
In 1943, Stelian was drafted into the Red Army and sent to the front.

“They weren’t supposed to — he had no training at all.
The moment he poked his head out of the trench, he was almost killed.”

Viktoria Roshchyna was not a soldier.  
She was a journalist.
She entered Russian-occupied territory to report on the war from the ground.  
She was captured and held in Russian captivity.  
Now, her body has been returned to Ukraine.  
She was identified through DNA.

In March 2022, Viktoria was reporting on Russia’s invasion from the Zaporizhzhia and Donetsk regions when she was detained by the FSB.  They held her for 10 days.  When released, she kept reporting  She wrote for «Hromadske», «Ukrainska Pravda», and «Radio Liberty».

She planned to go to Mariupol — to show what was really happening.  
Her route: through Poland, then Russia, to reach the occupied east.  
On August 3, 2023, Viktoria went missing while reporting from Russian-occupied territory.
