But in 2022, Stelian Makhsma died from hypothermia — caused by days spent hiding from #Russian bombs in #Mariupol.

Stelian was born in #Ukraine and lived through the #Holodomor — a Soviet-engineered famine that killed millions of Ukrainians.
When he was 11, his father was executed for refusing to join a collective farm.
In 1943, Stelian was drafted into the Red Army and sent to the front.

Viktoria Roshchyna was not a soldier.  
She was a journalist.
She entered Russian-occupied territory to report on the war from the ground.  
She was captured and held in Russian captivity.  
Now, her body has been returned to Ukraine.  
She was identified through DNA.

In March 2022, Viktoria was reporting on Russia’s invasion from the Zaporizhzhia and Donetsk regions when she was detained by the FSB.  They held her for 10 days.  When released, she kept reporting  She wrote for «Hromadske», «Ukrainska Pravda», and «Radio Liberty».

52-year-old Olena Nevara died on May 13, 2023, in the hospital in Dnipro where she had been taken after sustaining serious injuries as a result of russian shelling of her hometown of Malotaranivka in Donetsk region. Doctors fought for Olena`s life for two weeks. 1/3 Olena worked as a paramedic at the Donetsk Regional Center for Emergency Medical Aid and First Response Medicine. She was a sincere, sensitive, and kind person. She loved flowers. 2/3

Oleksii Bondar was killed on March 19, 2022, in Mykolaiv Region. The Russian army carried out an airstrike on his family's house. The 7-year-old boy died with his mother and grandmother.
Oleksii had just started school. He liked to play football. 1/4 He knew almost all the countries of the world and their capitals by heart. He liked to play chess and checkers with his father. 2/4

In Uman, Central Ukraine, russian missiles damaged ten high-rise buildings, killing 7 people as of 9:30 AM (Kyiv Time). Search and rescue operations are ongoing.

Vira Prokopenko from Mariupol started rescuing animals in 2014. She helped find shelter for more than 50 animals. 1/4 During the russian advance on Mariupol, the city was under heavy fire. Vira spent 12 days in the basement. She ran out to feed the cats whenever she got the chance. On March 11, 2022, a fire broke out there due to shelling. All animals died from carbon monoxide poisoning. 2/4

Ivan Ivanov was an ordinary Ukrainian teenager. He liked video games and spending time with his friends. It seemed that he had a whole life ahead of him but then it was cut down by a russian bullet. 1/6 Ivan was the first and very desired child of the Ivanov family from Kyiv. Vanya was a kind boy, he eagerly helped his mother in the household, and when the youngest daughter Dasha was born, he loved playing with his baby sister. 2/6

This month we remember Liza - a brave and happy girl who was suddenly taken from her family. 1/4 After the start of the russian full-scale invasion, 4-year-old Lisa and her mother moved to Vinnytsia from Kyiv because it seemed like a safer place for a child. 2/4

19-year-old Liana Noniashvili was killed alongside her mother and grandmother in a russian terrorist attack on a residential building in Dnipro on the 14th of January. 1/4
