Prigozhin’s family has played an important role in his business empire, live extravagantly off the proceeds of his crimes. Great piece by @MilesMJohnson on the family of Wagner Group’s corporate ringmaster. Thread of highlights.
Very good description of Wagner: “does not exist as a single incorporated entity, but instead as a sprawling network of interacting companies w varying degrees of proximity to Prigozhin’s Concord Group.” It’s a little less than a 400 companies by my last count.

Prigozhin’s mother Violeta has served in roles on his companies & he used her info to bypass due diligence checks of UK law firm. She runs Color of Life gallery where she exhibits her work, including a painting of Palmyra, the ancient Syrian city that Wagner captured twice.
3/
Apart from her previous role as shareholder of Concord Mgmt, her gallery is also audited by Accent, a firm w five employees that also audits “almost all of Prigozhin’s companies.”
Violeta and her husband, Prigozhin’s late stepfather Samuil Zharkoy, have supported Prigozhin’s endeavors since his youth. Zharkoi was Prigozhin’s partner in his first food businesses, and Violeta helped with accounting.
Prigozhin’s youngest daughter Veronika competes in show jumping in Europe - contrary to Prigozhin’s criticisms of “elites who take holidays abroad.” She participated in a competition in Spain four days before the invasion of Ukraine.
6/
She and Polina, Prigozhin’s elder daughter, have competed in hundreds of events across Europe since 2014. The horses ridden by Veronika and Polina are reportedly owned by Polina.
7/
Almost all of these horses registered to the Ru equestrian federation under other people’s names after Prigozhin’s property was sanctioned in 2019.
8/
Bonus picture of Prigozhin and fam, with Prigozhin rocking a shirt with Shoigu and Putin on it. Funny to see given his attitude towards Shoigu these days.
9/
Pavel, Prigozhin’s son, is usually who he cites as his claim to being different from other Russian elites - he has fought with Wagner etc. Here he is kitted out, allegedly near Donbas, though Telegram channels claim this was in St Petersburg.
10/
Pavel is the beneficiary of Lakhta Park Premium, which owns a large house in St Petersburg (the fancy Lakhta area). A company owned by the wife of Wagner namesake Dmitry Utkin is registered at this same address. dossier.center/utkin/
11/
All of Prigozhin’s immediate family have played roles on companies within his network that enable Wagner and its abuses, domestic and international corruption, political interference around the world, and more. They live very comfortably thanks to him.
12/
They have had their ability to travel freely in Europe limited since the invasion, but I would wager they most likely still hold assets abroad. They should have been sanctioned earlier, and the lifting of sanctions on Prigozhin’s mother is misguided.

With so much renewed interests in Wagner from Ukraine to Sudan, it’s worth highlighting experts who can provide reliable insight into the murky, rumor-filled universe of Wagner info. Collecting some of those here for the reference of journalists etc!
(Not at all comprehensive list, and mostly focused outside of journalists)
@lilia_yapparova of @meduzaproject is doing some of the most in-depth and original reporting on Wagner in Russian-language media. My exception to media caveat because she of the quality of her work and how useful it is for anyone working on this topic.
This piece raises some good points about Wagner, but files that the author describes don’t support claim that “Wagner is wholly private and answers only to Prigozhin.” Like other strategic enterprises in Russia, Wagner defies neat categorization.
As the author concedes, “Prigozhin’s units would sometimes find themselves under the operational control of the Ministry of Defence or the Russian special services: this has been the case in Syria since February 2022.”
2/
It also behooves us to acknowledge the limits of this particular leak. We don’t know what’s missing, what it includes versus excludes. Like earlier leaks, it is extremely useful to understanding Wagner, but it doesn’t give us a comprehensive view.

Prigozhin appears in a long video where he elaborates on his opinion about the problem with other “micro PMCs” like Potok, Redut, Konvoy, and the Russian Army. He describes Wagner as a totally different animal than these other PMCs.
He is outraged by other PMCs.
He visits PMC Potok, where he talks to combatants about how poorly equipped they and how they have no leadership. He refers to Potok as being “Gazprom fighters” who lack the equipment (like UAVs and sat imagery) and organization of Wagner.
He builds on previous comments describing Wagner as a “private army” with an ideology, devoted to defense of russia, rather than a PMC. He says it is only private in regards to the fact that it has no bureaucracy. t.me/concordgroup_o…

Prigozhin responds to CNN’s report that alleges Wagner transfer of arms to RSF in Sudan via Libya. Restates that no Wagner fighters in Sudan for more than 2 years, no training for Sudanese forces since 2019, no MANPADS transfer, offers to mediate. Says he won’t answer more qs.
Note that he specifies training for “Sudanese army” in 2019, doesn’t say about RSF. I tend to think “Wagner personnel” is intentionally specific, given security personnel at mining sites.
I am personally interested to see more details of Wagner’s involvement in transfers via Libya. Makes sense that Haftar is doing it, but curious about the specific role of Wagner. Transferring directly? Giving systems to Haftar that he then transfers? Etc.
Prigozhin publishes a statement offering to act as a mediator between Burhan and Hemedti in Sudan since he “knows all of the people who make decisions in Sudan.” He mentions receiving the Order of Rep. of Sudan in 2018 and Order of Two Niles in 2020.
He is fishing for attention with usual claims that “UN and others want blood of Sudanese but we just want peace.” Also offers to send medicine and other aid for the people and “soldiers on both sides who were until recently our brothers.”
This builds on his comments in response to questions from Jeune Afrique on April 19th, where he stated that there “have been no Wagner employees in Sudan for more than two years” and that none of his companies have interests in Sudan.
We do have the video of the interview, however - I agree Putin is evasive in his phrasing, says “we in principle do exactly what they (NATO) do… they have have them on separate countries of allies, prepare carriers, and train them”
Says “we aren’t transferring them to Belarus, NATO doesn’t transfer them” meaning control. But he does avoid saying in specific terms that nuclear weapons will be placed in Belarus on any timeline, just storage and training.
As is so often the case, everyone was quoting a TASS report that was based on the original interview. Game of telephone.
