(📢) To cause as much pro-Bluesky, Twitter ToS-compliant mayhem on this platform as I can, if you RETWEET this tweet enough times that I hit 1M followers I will in that instant tweet out my final Bluesky invite code.
I doubt this will work, but I’ll make that promise to you all.
PS/ My goal here is to show how badly people want off this platform. I do not believe there is much point to hitting 1M followers on Twitter because I believe Twitter is a zombie social media platform that is already effectively dead and will be totally dead very soon. Seriously.
PS2/ So if you RETWEET the first tweet in this thread you are, far more importantly than anything else, underscoring that you want off his sh*thole social media platform—now filled with pornbots and far-right trolls and crypto-bro Elongelicals—just as much as the rest of us do.
PS3/ So again, to be clear, I do not care about the 1M followers. I want to make a point here. And this is that point:
PS4/ Wondering if Elon personally throttles accounts he’s indicated he hates, like mine? Well, this thread is approaching 200 retweets in just a few minutes and this is how many followers Elon has allowed this feed to gain: zero
Click image to enlarge and you’ll see for yourself
PS5/ That’s the other point being made here—to overcome the algorithmic stunts Elon is pulling to destroy progressive feeds and critics specifically, the amount of combined action by Twitter users it takes is positively *astounding*
We’re all in a nepo-baby billionaire’s playpen
PS6/ BTW, if you want to know how badly Elon wants to keep folks off Bluesky let me put it this way: both Jack Dorsey and Yoel Roth are on Bluesky right now answering any question asked of them about Musk and his disgustingly cynical takeover of a now-broken social media platform
PS7/ 250 retweets of this thread, net follower gain: zero.
You have desperately throttled the feeds of your critics.
This feed gained thousands of followers every month for half a decade, and has lost 39,000+ since you arrived.
PS8/ No one here can defeat Elon—it's a beating-the-master-with-the-master's-tools situation. Any feed he wants to see pop gains literally hundreds of thousands of followers overnight. Any account that criticizes him or promotes other platforms can only lose followers thereafter.
PS9/ This is the sort of content over at Bluesky that Elon Musk doesn't want anyone here to see: those who know him and have worked for him saying clearly that they know that he can't be held accountable and will never be held accountable for his misconduct because of his wealth.
PS10/ This thread now has 345 retweets in about a half hour.
Net follower change for this feed? -2.
I hope folks will believe me now when I say that we’re all literally sitting in the middle of a chintzy plush baby’s playpen where Elon the Troll personally decides what happens.
PS11/
RETWEETS: 440
NET FOLLOWER CHANGE: -2
There is nothing a Musk critic can do anymore to grow on this platform. That has been clear for months now but I did really want to drive the point home. You criticize Musk at your peril. And if you criticize him, he wants you *gone*.
PS12/ I swear I was and am not trying to screw with people here. There is absolutely nothing you can do to push this feed to 1M followers. Or 975K followers. Or 950K followers. Or 925K followers. Or 920K followers. All the traffic is algorithmically handled to be pro-Elon. But...
PS13/ ...I certainly want everyone to know that if you somehow crack the code—figure out how to return the Twitter algorithm to actual free-speech mode—I will *of course* fulfill my promise and immediately tweet out a Bluesky invite code. I am sad that Elon makes that impossible.
PS14/
RETWEETS: 538
NET FOLLOWER CHANGE: -4
If there could be an actual #TwitterFiles dump sorted through by actual—non-Elon-pet—journalists, what we would learn about how Musk has tampered with the Twitter algorithm to punish progressives and his critics would *blow your mind*
PS15/ An update:
RETWEETS: 614
NET FOLLOWER CHANGE (not a typo): -40
UPDATE/ OK, I think I made my point with my pinned tweet. It’s now at 750 retweets as the new Musk Algorithm continues to take away my followers (-41 since I posted info that would naturally cause a follower influx).
🚨: I will post my final Bluesky invite code here at 7:50PM ET

1/ I think that one of the main reasons Bluesky keeps trending here and people keep looking by the tens—and hundreds—of thousands for invites to Bluesky is that a comprehensive report about it from someone who has spent time there has not yet been issued.
That changes right now.
2/ I publish the national rankings of post-Twitter alternatives—it’s one of several reasons Musk deems me an enemy—and for that curatorial journalistic work I’ve had to go to 130+ social media sites. I have accounts at a number of key sites.
(📢) An exposé on Bluesky is coming to both PROOF and RETRO today. You can choose yourself where to read it; it’s for full subscribers to either publication.
Those who aren’t in Bluesky will be happy they read this.

(🔐) Now that Elongelical Kristen Ruby has come at me for publishing the devastating news about Twitter below—Ruby was last seen on Bluesky threatening to call the cops on users in what felt like a weird ploy to bury Bluesky/aid Musk—I’m reposting it:
1/ So Elongelical Kristen Ruby shows up at Bluesky 21 days ago. Within 48 hours, she’s asking about how to block people—which is odd, because literally almost no one was on the app three weeks ago, maybe a few hundred people, or a few thousand? (Twitter has 450+ million MAUs.)
2/ When Elongelical Kristen Ruby gets the response to her query that anyone with any knowledge of tech would have expected—block functions are usually one of the last things added to a beta, I mean even *Taylor Lorenz* decided to accept this on Bluesky—her upbeat mood turns fast.
(PS) If you see the notice "invalid code," it simply means someone else got to it first.
(PS2) All Bluesky invite codes are single-use. Congratulations to whoever got in. I assume I will never know who it was, but I did want one of my invites to go to someone random; everyone else was (maybe understandably) giving codes only to friends or people they want to impress.
Republicans in Tennessee and Montana trying to expel minority politicians they find distasteful is part of the insurrection.
The gerrymandering in North Carolina and Wisconsin is part of the insurrection.
The bill to fire Dem prosecutors in Georgia is part of the insurrection.
When the Senate GOP blocked a Black president from naming a Supreme Court Justice he had a right to name, it began a period of U.S. history in which Republicans are trying to destroy our democracy from the inside. This is an active insurrection, and no one should think otherwise.
It’s time to stop pretending these events in Wisconsin, North Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia, Montana, and elsewhere—for instance, attempts to end democracy in Arizona, attempts to secede in Oregon and Idaho, open fascism in Florida—are disconnected. This is an active insurrection.
(🔐) NEW SERIES at RETRO: The Best AI Music in the World
I feel like this will be the most controversial series RETRO has launched, so it’s prefaced by a long essay about my history in music and how we can think about AI music. I hope you’ll RETWEET.
1/ This first entry in the series contains "new" music by Nirvana—and would've included music "by" Drake & The Weeknd but that appears to be headed for litigation after "Heart on My Sleeve" got *15 million streams* before being taken down.
AI music is about to be a *huge* topic.
2/ I spent a lot of time considering whether or not to replace the track "by" Drake & The Weeknd with an absolutely astonishing unplugged cover "by" Kanye West—and I ultimately appended a note to that excellent track explaining why I decided to go for it. (West is an antisemite.)
