In this thread I'll take a look at the Giro course. Later this week I'll post my teams preview + fantasy team tips and classifications. Short and simple, in my own style. First some general observations:
- Giro for sprinters. If you can climb this Giro offers you 10+ chances. Looking at you Mads, Bling, Albanese.
- Add up the 3 time trials and the GC days and there's not much room for break away artists.
- However, stage 4 offers a beautiful chance to take Giro glory and pink.
- stage 1: TT (19.6 km). Ganna, Kung, Remco, Roglic
- stage 2: Bunch sprint
- stage 3: Reduced sprint. Big day for Mads/Bling
- stage 4: Break. Pink for grabs. Perfect timing to give the jersey away. Big day for those already in great form. Did anyone say Healy, Lafay?
- stage 5: Bunch sprint. Too many teams interested in sprints in the first week, never mind some hills.
- stage 6: This could go to the break. But with Bling, Mads, Groves all in for their sprinter I expect a sprint.
- stage 7. GC day. Not the hardest climb. GC sprint.
- stage 8. Muro dei Cappuccini. Easily the best named hill in the race. Day for the break.
- stage 9. TT (35 km). Big day for Remco.
- stage 10. Same as stage 6. If the strong sprinters want, it will be a sprint. Will depend on ciclamino standings.
If for example Mads has won two stages and a big lead, Trek could be happy to let a break go.
- stage 11. Bunch sprint.
- stage 12. Early break or late attack. Nice profile!
- stage 13. GC day. First real test.
- stage 14. Reduced sprint. Big climb but 100 km flat till finish.
- stage 15. Mini Lombardia! Could be a day for the break, but if raced properly you can drop some GC bombs.
- stage 16. GC day. 2nd real test.
- stage 17. Sprint.
- stage 18. GC day or break.
- stage 19. Queen stage!!
- stage 20. what the HELL!!
- stage 21. Sprint.
