1) Pivot
Pivoting is saying "yes" instead of "no"
Instead of saying: “No, we can’t have a snack until after you have a nap,”

Say: “Yes, we can have a snack when you wake up from your nap.”

2) Reframe
Reframing is using your kid's imagination and sense of play
You need to get in the car and be on time for an appointment. Your kid has other plans
Instead of telling them to get in the car NOW, tell them it's a race and whoever gets in the car first is the winner

3) Give a reason
"Because I said so" is not a reason and leads to more problems
"We have to put the toys away or your brother might trip and get an ouchie"
It doesn't always work but is effective in the long run

4) Respect
Showing we respect by listening to your kids goes a long way
"I know you don't want to put your coat on. You like your shirt and want to show your friends."
It doesn't mean they don't have to follow your ask. But it does show them you're listening and respectful
