chris oneyng had the most basic sense of humor in 2008 it was like garfield for newgrounds kids
this is actually still funny
zach psychicpebbles kinda all of a sudden 180ed his personality from wackyzany to lowcaps deadpan to get with the internet times
that text at the end is the kinda "telling it like it is epic bacon maddox truth bomb" no one would do now
"is that the bad guy from the star wars" is good
this is still pretty funny. not sure what makes his old wackyzany work and what doesn't but a big part of it is probably the specific egoraptor brand of "wacky faces" in some of the other cartoons
HDD did the wacky faces better, like they feel less forced
compare to this at 1:34 I think the problem with those faces & the over the top slurred voices is it feels more like someone trying to be wacky instead of a character
ok dress.mov has egoraptor-isms too (visually beyond him doing voice acting) but I forgot cuz rarity is good
shed.mov is the one that just feels like a normal cartoon
not really funny when a character randomly does a dumb face or masturbates or their face spins around or something just to be wacky. shed.mov just feels like an animated short not a "wacky egoraptor internet animation". really egoraptor wasn't good for newgrounds
when the characters switch to more on-model designs then back it helps the comedy & fits with what's going on instead of being something that randomly happens just to say "you are watching a wacky cartoon LOL!"
it's a well made short but no one will admit it cuz ponies + "edgy"
WGJ4K is the most visually conservative HDD series but it's legit well written. going from "video game parodies are fucking stupid" to introspective "maybe I'm the asshole" is the kinda thing most NG cartoons wouldn't do
way funnier than anything spazkid did at the time (worst egoraptor clone back then + trying to be rtil with the newgrounds parodies but not funny & without the skill to justify being le epic cynical satire man) though I respect him for admitting that stuff was needlessly spiteful
spazkid was basically a sonic coomer before that, then discovered irony & went "ughhh I'm so cringe, better change" so he immediately made a chrischan parody series & shat on every NG person to rebrand himself, then he realized being a sonic coomer was better than that & retvrned

used to think "you can change stuff if it's a show for little kids & cultural elements might be hard to grasp" but at this point, nah. the cartoons I grew up with were full of US cultural stuff that simply did not exist in romania & I pieced em together
when I was a small kid watching Dexter's Lab I didn't know what D&D was or that it was a huge sensation in America; it took way longer for pen & paper games to become a thing here. didn't know all the stuff about US presidents they made jokes about. I still pieced it together
didn't know what "square" meant; I bet US kids watching Flintstones decades later didn't either cuz it wasn't the 60s. figured out it meant "uncool old person" still. Japan's seen as particularly alien for xenophobic reasons ppl acknowledge UNLESS it's time to defend localization
not to defend his comment but The Dark Knight being a huge superhero movie & basically saying "sometimes it's ok for the government to spy on you" is, while not directly comparable, in the same ballpark
maybe? either way I don't think the average person cares that much. Takehiko Inoue was pro Hong Kong and China still flocked to the Slam Dunk movie
it's not necessarily about political allegiance but it's hard to take this stuff as "workers fighting back" when everyone still has the same "everything is good, we are in a golden age" attitude.
you can say blade runner 2049 is bad too & I know a lot of my followers would consider that comment pretentious (haven't seen the movie myself); it's not about that guy it's about the overall group hug mentality created by ppl airing their thoughts 24/7 while their bosses look on
he tweeted in a hashtag a few times in 2014 without becoming an obsessive loser about it; your site shilled lolicon anime to 13 year old tumblr girls saying it's feminist. shut up
it's really funny how every anifem writer silently disowned maid dragon on twitter after years but couldn't even do it on the main site cuz the site only exists to shill
I have my criticisms of some of Barder's takes but it's more just typical anime fan stuff than anything ideological & he's way better than most. he interviews mecha designers in the Darius games; barely anyone would do that outside of Japan forbes.com/sites/olliebar…
hmmm back then it was more ok to watch kids' cartoons if they were made for boys, like Regular Show, or unisex like Adventure Time, instead of for girls like MLP. Fox News' RedEye wouldn't have done a feature on nerds who watch Batman or Spiderman cartoons
BUT ALSO I do think there's not much going on in the show to watch it as a particularly good cartoon like PPG; more for the identity-building novelty & quirk of watching something really girly + let's not bullshit, it is basically liked as a moe waifu anime
BUT it's not "bronies are zoophiles who want to fuck irl animals" as much as internet sexuality making people attracted to whatever character has neoteny and a human voice you find attractive
thinking more about the whole trans kids thing more I came to a conclusion that will piss everyone off as usual: dysphoria is real & it could very well be possible to identify it before puberty, but I don't trust the current cultural landscape to do that
people go from "it's bad to gatekeep gender identity, let people be trans for whatever reason they have" to "kids NEED to go through with this or they will be mentally fucked forever, this is a life-or-death dysphoria issue" but don't consciously acknowledge this contrast
if trans culture had a clearly defined stance of "for adults it's whatever, even if someone won't be depressed forever without a pair of fat tits you shouldn't judge em if they get em, but with kids you better make pretty damn sure they're dysphoric" it'd be different. they don't
