A short thread on hypocrisy, partisanship, and why the #bekind crew aren't, and maybe have never been, all that kind.

E.g.
The #bekind crew HATE it when you talk about ability/intelligence. In the vid, Phil tells Tom he isn't clever enough to interview him.
I mean, how can you believe in inclusion, equity or any kind of progressive political or ethical values and be totally fine with that kind of argument? If he'd said "I don't think you know enough about the issues" that would be one thing (still rude) but HE DIDN'T HE SAID CLEVER
It's interesting, as trads like me have long argued that we are the "real progressives", that the values and strategies we advocate are the ones that will bring the greatest gains to the unluckiest in society. This proves it more than ever.

>
It *should* be surprising, but it just isn't anymore. The partisanship is astonishing. If he's on "your team" he can act however he likes and say outrageous things but it's chill, because he's being "misrepresented"

>
People saying the issue is with the tone, not the content. I mean, tone is kinda important? But also, the content by its nature is inflammatory, talking about SLANT as proto-fascism. Barking.

>
Oh, also, it wasn't just an act. I've looked at old videos and he shows the same behaviours. Slouching, not looking at the camera, rude and personal attacks, dismissive arguments, failure to engage with the substance.

>
Finally, I know partisanship affects everyone. Me too, but for the record, I don't do SLANT. I don't advocate it. I've only seen it once. It's not my thing, but equally I don't really care if others want to do it, because I think it's FINE.
Prepared in advance: this isn't bickering, and it isn't a false dichotomy. This is a very specific case, and a very specific generalised argument, that Matters because these people are part of a movement that seeks to influence national education policy. I *will* discuss it.

We *know* that retrieval is crucial in geography. You need to build a broad and deep baseline knowledge to be able to tie the concepts together and think in the multidisciplinary way which characterises geography more than any other school subject.

If your lesson start is strong, the odds are the rest of the lesson will also be strong. Great tips here from @MrAWGordon_

@Mr_Raichura continues to ladle out excellent advice for Ratio and attention management in class, and this blog has some really good strategies to try.

I go to a lot of schools, and everyone is focusing on metacognition or dual coding or disciplinary this or curriculum intent that. Then I go into lessons, and teachers are asking questions and students are calling out answers or tchrs are picking ones with hands up. Fix that.

>
If students know that they will never be asked to talk or share their opinions or give an answer, they'll switch off. They become passengers in lessons. They aren't pushed, their understanding isn't checked.

>
Then of course, I check if I'm right by just asking them.

"hey, could you tell me what sir just said?" "oh dunno"

"hey, your friend over there just gave a great answer, what did they say?" "oh dunno"

Ok, time for a bit of nuance on the whole behaviour thing, and it starts with the fact that

Yes, I think discipline is important
Yes, I think rules are important
Yes, I think consequences are important

BUT

Yes, I also absolutely *hate* all of the above.

>
The foundation of a free, liberal and democratic society is that people have agency and autonomy to live lives the way they want. We try to only take that freedom away from people when they might cause harm to others or themselves. But it's a *concession* to reality.

>
Do I *want* to control when a child goes to the toilet, or when they're allowed to talk, or what side of a corridor they walk on or whether they can have their phone in a lesson? Obviously not. But if I don't, they could cause harm to themselves or to their colleagues.

The spectacle of left and right wingers arguing over the Nazis political positions is extraordinarily unedifying.

As if we can a priori infer anything about left or right wingers today from what the Nazis did. Toxic discourse.
There's only one response to this discourse:

"I am willing to discuss what the Nazis did. I am willing to discuss if contemporary events or discourse are similar or different to what the Nazis did. I am not willing to discuss whether they were right or left wing. >
Such discourse is used to invite people to think 'oh, this person is left wing, and therefore like the Nazis' or the converse. This is a stupid thing to think, so I won't engage with it at all."

Here's a fun thing to think about in your lesson tomorrow: it's called the "repeated instruction game"

It goes a bit like this

👇👇
In pretty much every lesson I observe, I see a teacher on at least one occasion having to repeat an instruction.

**Most instructions that I hear delivered are repeated at least three times - trust me, I keep count**

>
Sometimes, the repeat is to one student. Sometimes it's to the whole class. Either way. It happens. And in the majority of cases it's simply because the instructions weren't delivered well the first time.

What do I mean by "not delivered well"?
