I’ve been involved in efforts to save the Sir John Maxwell School for a while so it was with a heavy heart I viewed this👇on site yesterday. Sadly, such an uncontrolled collapse, which happened at a known weak point in the building fabric, means the game is probably up…😔! 1/4
What these images show is how: the roof is no longer supported; the wall directly below the collapse is bowing out due to the eccentric loading caused by the weight of masonry and roof timbers pressing down onto the top floor; and, exposed brick walls have lost their mortar 2/4
We’re hoping the beautiful Edwardian Baroque classical entrances for Boys and Girls and the central portion of the south facade with the #GlasgowStyle lettering and columns can be safely taken down and removed for reuse in a new development so the heritage isn’t totally lost 3/4
Call me sentimental but one of the reasons I wanted to save this school was because it’s architect, Arthur Donald Hamilton, died aged 34 on the first day of the Somme having declined a commission as he felt he should ‘serve in the line with everyone else’. That touched me…😢 4/4
