May the Fourth be with you!

When I first learned that Taking Flight was to be published today, I had a decision to make. Sit in the corner grumping about 'that so-called "Star Wars Day"' or embrace it.

So here’s a thread of flying creatures in Star Wars.
#StarWarsDay A copy of Taking Flight on ...
First the disclaimers:
– I am not a Star Wars person. I’m not *not* a Star Wars person – I have seen some of them – but also I am not a 'Star Wars person'
– All creatures are taken from Wookieepedia
– They only qualify if they appear in the main film series
Aiwha
Massive winged cetaceans, native to the planet Kamino. Strong swimmers & flyers, they were also known as "air whales". They’re peaceful, majestic, and (sob) give out bleating cries when dying.
Given the space, I would happily adopt an aiwha. #StarWarsDay #TakingFlightBook An illustration of an Aiwha...
Bogwing
Native to the planet Naboo, and prodigious load-bearers (they could carry nine times their own weight), Bogwings were released into the sky to signal halftime in games of Gulliball. They could have just used a whistle. A green creature with dangl...
Sketto
Ferocious nocturnal cave-dwelling blood-sucking four-winged pests from Tatooine. That’s probably all you need to know at this stage. #StarWarsDay #TakingFlightBook It certainly looks ferociou...
Dactillion
Tamed by the Utai (at great risk to themselves, given that Dactillions were ferociously carnivorous), these horned creatures were an important mode of transport, valued for their ability to cover huge distances at speed. I want one. Grey and slender with an up...
Can-cell
Four-winged insects. Three metres long.
Three. Metres.
I love insects, but even I have my limits. You're probably better off ...
Peko-peko
Long-tailed birds with clawed wings. They live in swamps, which must play merry hell with their tail feathers, surely? #StarWarsDay #TakingFlightBook A blue-grey broad-winged bi...
Saving the best till last.

Porg
Stocky little cliff-dwelling beakless seabirds which make a variety of cute sounds and enjoy being scratched behind their ears. Set the cute-ometer to 11. #TakingFlightBook #StarWarsDay Huge dark eyes. White body....
So there you go. An entirely worthwhile use of several hours trawling through Wookieepedia. No doubt you'll all be saying 'oh but what about...?'
Do feel free to add any I've missed.
And do feel free to share this far and wide. bit.ly/3kthp7C

Morning everyone. Taking Flight is officially published today. If clicking on links is your thing, and if buying books is also your thing, then today is your lucky day. The cover is by Jo Walker. bit.ly/3kthp7C A copy of Taking Flight on ...
Taking Flight started with a realisation: flight is amazing and ridiculous and I didn’t really know anything about it.
So I started asking myself questions, writing down all the things I didn’t know.
There were a lot of them.
Then I started looking for answers.
Each answer spawned a new question, and soon I was:
– very confused
– very enthusiastic Arthur Shappey, a confused ...

The World Cup of National Birds of the Four Remaining Teams in the Football World Cup.

1. Argentina – Rufous hornero Small, rufous, standing on one leg, red of eye. Quite sweet,
2. Croatia – Common nightingale Another plain brown one, but at least this one is singing.
3. France – (Gallic) rooster Chunky chicken, with, quite frankly, a real hotchpotch of pl

Trashing a book in a book group is fine, btw. Part of the deal is bad reviews. But extrapolating a whole thing about the other part of my working life? wtf?
Why not have a go at my parenting while you're at it? Or my cooking perhaps?

Getting near the end of Round 2, and I continue to be delighted/astonished by the interest in it.
Not just the number of votes, but the level of investment in the idea of ‘good’ and ‘bad’ words.
“No no no no NO! Have people actually gone MAD?! ‘Flanglepliggledip’ is OBVIOUSLY better than ‘phlurm’, you IDIOTS!”
